Water Leak at Front Corner of Luggage Compartment

If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of water entry at the front corners of the luggage compartment, this may be caused by a leaky body flange. Follow the procedure outlined below to reseal the front body flange.

1. Protect area surrounding repair to prevent paint damage.

2. Place the Vario roof in the luggage compartment, leave trunk lid open toward rear.

3. Clean water drains using compressed air.

4. Remove end stop (Figure 1, 1) and sheet metal spacer (Figure 1, 2).

5. Pull off seal (Figure 1, 3).

Note:
Only pull off the seal up to the beginning of the slope of the B-pillar trim.

6. Remove sealant residue from body flange. Clean body flange with window cleaning agent (A005 989 19 71). Do not allow the adhesive remaining in the seal to come in contact with cleaning agent, as this may cause a leak. Replace any fitted plastic dowels with rivet nuts (A001 990 90 58).

7. Place seal strip (Figure 1, 4) (A002 989 35 98 10) on body flange as shown and move inward and outward.

8. Apply sealing compound (Figure 1, 5) (A001 989 63 20) around rivet nuts and along seam seal as shown.

9. Place seal on body flange and firmly push down at locations where adhesive has been applied.

10. Install sheet metal spacer (Figure 1, 2) and end stop (Figure 1, 1). If short end stop is fitted replace it with a modified, longer end stop (A230 757 03 44).

11. Perform water leak test (Figure 2).

Note: The description given in the testing/repair work in the WIS group 77.30 should be ignored and all work should performed according to this repair method.
