Remove/Install

DANGER:
- Lethal injuries are possible if vehicle slips off of lifting platform
- Align vehicle between the columns of the hydraulic hoist and position the four support plates below the hoist support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
- Risk of injury from trapping or crushing body parts, risk of injury to skin and eyes due to brake fluid spraying out at high pressure when working on the SBC brake system
- Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS.

CAUTION:
- While working on the rear axle care must be taken to ensure that the surface of all aluminum components do not get any scratches, cracks and notches. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be affected
- See Special information on AIRmatic
- See notes on self-locking nuts and bolts.

1 Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS.
2 Empty rear air springs using STAR DIAGNOSIS
- With Airmatic, code (489a)

CAUTION: Installation: Always fill the rear air springs in the KO position otherwise they will be irreparably damaged!

3 Remove twelve-point nut (12) from rear axle shaft (37)

NOTE: Installation: Replace twelve-point nut, tighten and secure.

4 Remove rear wheel
5 Remove brake pads on rear axle

CAUTION: Hang the floating caliper up with a hook to relieve the strain on the brake hose.

6 Detach rear brake cable (86)

NOTE: Only detach in the case of an automatic cable slack adjuster.

7 Detach link rod (6k) of torsion bar from wheel carrier (7)
8 Raise wheel carrier (7) using transmission jack and transmission platform until axle shaft (37) is roughly horizontal

CAUTION: Installation: Tighten bolted connections of torque strut, camber strut, thrust arm and track rod.

9 Detach torque strut (3) from wheel carrier (7)

CAUTION: Installation: Secure torque strut loosely.

10 Detach camber strut (2) from wheel carrier (7)

CAUTION: Installation: Secure camber strut loosely

11 Detach track rod (4) from wheel carrier (7)

CAUTION: Installation: Secure track rod loosely.

12 Detach thrust arm (5) from wheel carrier (7)

CAUTION: Installation: Secure thrust arm loosely.

13 Lower transmission jack

NOTE: Installation: Raise wheel carrier (7) with transmission jack and transmission platform until axle shaft (37) is roughly horizontal.

14 Fold wheel carrier (7) back and pull rear axle shaft (37) out of rear axle shaft flange

CAUTION: Hook the rear axle shaft up to avoid damaging the rubber sleeve of the rear axle shaft. If the rear axle shaft is difficult to remove, See Press rear axle shaft out of rear axle shaft flange.

15 Lever rear axle shaft (37) out of rear axle center assembly (50) and remove rear axle shaft (37)

CAUTION: Model 211.004/006: do not fasten an assembly lever to the protection ring (37a).

NOTE: Model 211.004/006: support assembly lever on the rear axle center assembly (50) with an open ended wrench, for example.

CAUTION: Installation: Replace circlip (37o) on inner spline profile.

Inspecting
16 Check constant velocity joints and rubber boots for leaks and damage

NOTE:
- If a constant velocity joint is defective, Replace complete rear axle shaft.
- If a rubber boot is damaged or leaky, Replace rubber boot on rear axle shaft.

17 Check condition of lateral radial sealing ring in rear axle center assembly

NOTE:
- If damaged or leaking, Replace radial sealing ring on side of rear axle center assembly

18 Install in the reverse order
19 Check oil level in rear axle center assembly, correct if necessary
20 Activate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS
21 Use STAR DIAGNOSIS to move brake pads toward brake disks
22 Carry out chassis alignment check.
