Remove/Install Front Axle Shafts
DANGER:
- Lethal injuries are possible if vehicle slips off of lifting platform
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
CAUTION: See notes on self-locking nuts and bolts.
1 Remove front wheels
2 Unscrew hexagon collar bolt (61a) on front axle shaft (60a or 60b)
3 Detach lower engine compartment paneling
4 Press supporting joint (7) out of steering knuckle (5)
5 Press tie rod joint (10a) out of steering knuckle (5)
6 Move steering knuckle (5) out of supporting joint (7)
7 Turn the back of the steering knuckle (5) outwards and then pull outwards, while moving the front axle shaft (60a or 60b) out of the front axle shaft flange
CAUTION: Do not damage boots of the front axle shaft (60a or 60b) and of the supporting joint (7).
NOTE: If necessary, to loosen the front axle shaft (60a or 60b), screw in the hexagon-collar bolt (61a) again a few threads and drive out the front axle shaft slightly using a rubber-headed hammer.
8 Press out and remove right front axle shaft (60a)
CAUTION: Do not damage the rubber boots and rpm sensor rotor. To avoid damaging the wheel bearings, the vehicle must not be moved on its wheels anymore with the front axle shaft (60a) removed.
9 Hammer out and remove left front axle shaft (60b)
CAUTION: Do not damage the plastic guard ring (60m), rubber boots and rpm sensor rotor. To avoid damaging the wheel bearings, the vehicle must not be moved on its wheels anymore with the front axle shaft (60b) removed.
Inspecting
10 Check joints and rubber boots for leaks and damage
NOTE: If damaged, the front axle shaft (60a or 60b) must be replaced.
11 Install in the reverse order.
