Removing and Installing Rear Axle Center Assembly
Shown On Model 211 With Airmatic:
Removing, Installing
DANGER:
- Risk of fatal accident if the vehicle slips off the lifting platform
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
- Risk of injury with trapped or crushed body parts, risk of injury to skin and eyes from brake fluid spraying out at high pressure when working on the SBC brake system.
- Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS.
CAUTION:
- When working on the rear axle, take care to avoid leaving scratches, cracks or notches in the surfaces of any aluminum components. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be reduced.
- See notes on AIRmatic
- See notes on self-locking bolts and nuts
1 Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS
2 Empty right rear air spring using STAR DIAGNOSIS
- With Airmatic, code (489a)
CAUTION: Installation: Always fill the rear air springs in the KO position otherwise they will be irreparably damaged!
3 Remove rear brake cables
NOTE: Do not remove the brake cables from the wheel carrier.
4 Detach propeller shaft (106) from rear axle center assembly (50)
NOTE: The flexible coupling remains on the propeller shaft.
5 Loosen fitted sleeves of flexible couplings on flange
6 Unscrew bolts for propeller shaft intermediate bearing (106a) and remove rear section of propeller shaft (106)
NOTE: Installation: Assemble the propeller shaft in the correct position. Tighten flexible coupling on rear axle center assembly before tightening bolts on propeller shaft intermediate bearing.
7 Remove right rear axle shaft (37)
8 Unscrew bolts (41j) and remove left and right additional volume reservoirs (41p) from front center assembly mounting (51)
- With Airmatic, code (489a)
9 Support rear axle center assembly (50) using transmission jack and transmission platform, and lash securely
10 Unscrew bolt (64b) of rear center assembly mounting in rear axle carrier
11 Unscrew left and right bolts (51a) of front center assembly mounting (51)
NOTE: Installation: Ensure that the shims (51b) are correctly positioned: The triangular cutout should point upwards.
12 Lower rear axle center assembly (50) slightly.
13 Lever left rear axle shaft (37) out of rear axle center assembly (50)
CAUTION: Do not rest the assembly lever on the protection ring (37a).
NOTE:
- Support the assembly lever on the rear axle center assembly (50) e.g. using an open-end wrench.
- Tie up left rear axle shaft.
- Installation: Replace locking ring (37o) on inner splined profile.
14 Lower rear axle center assembly (50)
15 Unscrew bolts (51 c) and remove front center assembly mounting (51)
16 Install in the reverse order
17 Check rear axle center assembly oil level and correct if necessary
18 Activate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS
19 Use STAR DIAGNOSIS to move brake pads toward brake discs
20 Carry out chassis alignment check.
