Steering Shaft Coupler: Service and Repair
Remove/Install Steering Coupling
CAUTION: See notes on self-locking nuts and bolts
1 Switch off easy entry function for driver's seat and steering wheel
- Vehicles with memory.
CAUTION: Otherwise the driver's seat and steering wheel move to a different position, e.g. when the driver's door is opened or closed. The upper frame may be damaged when the retainer special tool is installed.
NOTE: It is switched off using the buttons on the steering wheel in the "Comfort" menu on the multifunction display, see vehicle owner's manual.
DANGER:
- Lethal injuries are possible if vehicle slips off of lifting platform
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
2 Raise vehicle.
3 Detach lower engine compartment paneling
4 Disconnect the connector (a) on the control valve of the rack-and-pinion steering and unclip cable on exhaust shielding plate of steering coupling (23m) and on the front axle carrier
5 Detach exhaust shielding plate of steering coupling (23m) at control valve of rack-and-pinion steering (23)
NOTE: Three screws.
6 Unscrew upper and lower bolt (25a, 25b) of steering coupling (25)
NOTE: To do this, rotate the steering coupling (25) into the corresponding position.
CAUTION: Installation: Replace locking plate (25g) with self-locking nut
7 Turn steering wheel to center position (front wheels in straight-ahead position) and secure with holding device
CAUTION: The steering wheel must not be turned with the steering coupling (25) detached otherwise the contact spiral will be destroyed.
8 Carefully pull steering coupling (25) out of control valve of rack-and-pinion steering (predetermined breaking point on control valve)
CAUTION: Do not use force (hammer blows, excessive leverage).
NOTE: Installation: Turn rack-and-pinion steering (23) to center position and fit steering coupling (25)
9 Disconnect steering coupling (25) from the lower steering shaft
CAUTION: Do not use force (hammer, strong lever action) since the lower steering shaft is sensitive to lateral impacts.
10 Remove divided exhaust shielding plate (25f) from the steering coupling
- To do this, fold the lugs (b, c) upwards and separate the halves.
11 Install in the reverse order.
