Fluid - Transfer Case: Testing and Inspection
Check and correct oil level of transfer case
To gain access to all the oil plugs, the rear engine crossmember (42) with the rear engine mount (45) must be removed and the front propeller shaft must be disconnected from the transfer case (16).
1. Detach vibration damper (16c) from transfer case (16).

2. Raise the automatic transmission using the assembly lift and transmission platform until the transfer case is in the installation position.
Only perform the oil level check at interior temperature and not when the transfer case is hot.
3. Clean area around oil filler opening screw plug (7a).
4. Unscrew the oil filler opening screw plug (7a).
5. Unscrew the inspection opening screw plug (7b).

6. Add oil via the oil filler opening until it runs out of the inspection opening.
This is the only way to perform the check because there is another oil chamber behind the oil filler opening which must be full.
7. Allow oil to run out for one to two minutes then screw in and tighten inspection opening screw plug (7b). Install new sealing ring for inspection opening screw plug (7b).
8. Screw in and tighten oil filler opening screw plug (7a).
Install new sealing ring for oil filler opening screw plug (7a).
9. Attach vibration damper (16c) to transfer case (16).
