AH42.45-P-0001-01P Features of electronic stability program (ESP) AH and electronic traction control (4ETS)

15.03.07 The document has been updated to this date and will no longer be subject to revision.

All basic versions of the 4MATIC models in the model series 203, 211 and 220 are equipped with the electronic stability program (ESP) as standard. The electronic traction system (ETS), which has been specially modified for the 4MATIC drive unit, is also integrated. This system replaces the mechanical interaxle and axle differential locks of conventional 4MATIC systems.

The functionality and level of reliability are identical to the standard version.

Benefits:
^ Reduction in weight
^ Reduction in manufacturing costs

The electronic traction system (ETS) is the traction controller in the electronic stability program (ESP). Owing to the fixed drive torque distribution of 40% at the front axle and 60% at the rear axle, the 4MATIC already provides a very good traction potential. If despite this one or more wheels start to spin on a slippery surface, the electronic traction system (ETS) cuts in.

The necessary brake pressure is then generated automatically at each spinning wheel in order to reduce the excessive wheel speed. At the same time the resulting locking differential effect transfers an additional drive torque to the non-spinning wheels.

A flashing warning lamp in the instrument cluster informs the driver that one or more wheels are beginning to spin. In this case, the driver should adapt his driving style to the existing road conditions.

The stability control can be deactivated by pressing the ESP OFF button. The electronic traction system (ETS), however, remains operational. A permanently lit warning lamp in the instrument cluster tells the driver that the stability control has been deactivated.
