Remove/install Rear Axle Shaft
- Slide-In Design
DANGER:
- Risk of death. Death may result if vehicle slips or topples from the lifting platform.
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
CAUTION: See notes on self-locking nuts and bolts
1 Remove twelve-point collared nut (40) from rear axle shaft (37)
CAUTION: To avoid damage to the wheel bearing, do not move a vehicle on its wheels after the twelve-point collared nut has been slackened.
NOTE: Installation: Replace twelve-point collar nut.
2 Remove rear wheel
3 Unscrew fixed brake caliper (111) from the rear axle
NOTE: Tie fixed caliper to body.
4 Remove torsion bar link rod (6k)
5 Unscrew left front rpm sensor (L6/1) or right front rpm sensor from wheel carrier (7)
6 Unscrew torque strut (3) from wheel carrier (7)
NOTE: Installation: The rear-axle shaft must be horizontal when tightening the nut
7 Unscrew camber strut (2) from wheel carrier (7)
NOTE: Installation: The rear-axle shaft must be horizontal when tightening the nut
8 Unscrew tie rod (4) from wheel carrier (7)
NOTE: Installation: The rear-axle shaft must be horizontal when tightening the nut
9 Unscrew thrust arm (5) from wheel carrier (7)
NOTE: Installation: The rear-axle shaft must be horizontal when tightening the nut
10 Fold wheel carrier (7) outwards and simultaneously press the rear axle shaft (37) out of the rear axle shaft flange
CAUTION:
- Do not over-stretch brake control cable (arrow).
- Do not damage rubber sleeves of rear axle shaft or exciter ring for speed sensor.
NOTE:
- Fold back wheel carrier and secure.
- If rear axle shaft is firmly attached, see Press rear axle shaft out of rear axle shaft flange
11 Pull rear axle shaft (37) out of rear axle center assembly
NOTE: Do not damage radial sealing ring in rear axle housing.
12 Check condition of radial sealing ring in rear axle housing
NOTE: If the radial sealing ring is damaged or leaking, see Replacing radial sealing ring of rear axle shaft in rear axle housing
13 Install in the reverse order
14 Check rear axle oil level and correct if necessary
