General information
The oil level is constantly monitored by the oil sensor (oil level, temperature and quality, B40) and the corresponding data are relayed to the Active Service System (ASSYST) computer. Oil top-ups are automatically detected, and result in a quantity rebate, which correspondingly extends the service interval. Overfilling the oil or incorrect oil quantities are displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1) together with the oil can symbol. Display of the oil quantity:
- Turn the transmitter key (A8/1) to the "circuit 15 ON" position.
- Press the system selection button (S110s3) repeatedly until the multifunction display (A1p13) shows the basic display (total and trip odometer) (only necessary if basic display is not yet shown)
- Press the forward and backward scroll pushbutton (S110s1) until the multifunction display (A1p13) displays the message "Engine oil level measurement in progress! "Measurement is correct only when vehicle is on level ground" is displayed
- If the vehicle is not level, cancel the measurement via further actuation of these buttons within 3 s.
- If the measurement is not canceled, after about 3 s the message "ENGINE OIL LEVEL, MEASUREMENT RUNNING" is displayed

Waiting time
Measuring the oil level is only possible following the expiration of a waiting time following "engine OFF".
If the driver tries to check the oil level during "Engine ON", the message "engine oil level not available while engine is running!" appears.
The waiting time after shutting the engine off depends on the engine oil temperature.
It is:
- up to 20 °C ->30 min
- as of 60 °C ->1 min

In the case of other temperatures, the waiting time assumes corresponding intermediate values.

Display in the event of measuring system errors
If there is a fault in the measuring system such as a fault in the oil sensor (oil level, temperature and quality) (B40), the oil can symbol and the message "Engine oil level - Visit workshop!" are displayed no sooner than 30 s after the fault has occurred.
In order to perform the diagnosis, the motor electronics control unit (N3/10) or the CDI control unit (N3/9) have to be read out via STAR DIAGNOSIS.
The instrument cluster (A1) receives the sensor data over the Controller Area Network bus Class C (engine compartment) (CAN-C) from the vehicle-specific engine control unit.

Oil change
Following each oil change, ASSYST must be reset. On resetting, the remaining distance and the remaining time are reset. Resetting can be carried out via the instrument cluster (A1) or via STAR DIAGNOSIS.

On resetting, the following data are stored:
- Current kilometer reading, rounded to 100 km
- Total of top-up quantities in the last interval
- Remaining distance
- Remaining time
- Product of quality factors
- In 5 data records the data of the most recent 5 resets

These data can only be read out via STAR DIAGNOSIS.
The starting distance (internal mileage) is reduced if the prescribed quantity of oil is not filled in when the oil is changed.
