Remove, Install Exhaust Manifold

Remove/Install


DANGER:
- Risk of explosion from hydrogen gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns from swallowing battery electrolyte. Risk of injury to eyes and skin suffering caustic burns from battery electrolyte or from contact with damaged lead acid batteries.
- No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking.
- Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing and glasses. Pour battery electrolyte only into suitable and appropriately marked containers.


1 Disconnect ground line of battery
2 Remove engine compartment paneling
3 Disconnect oxygen sensor connector
4 Dismount exhaust shielding plates of steering coupling at control valve and engine
5 Completely remove exhaust system
6 Dismount exhaust shielding plate for propeller shaft of front axle gear
- Collar bolt of mounting carrier to front axle gear and engine mount carrier = 22 Nm

7.1 Remove engine suction air ducts upstream of air cleaner
7.2 Remove air cleaner
- Remove air cleaner by lifting vertically up and off the cylinder head covers.

8 Remove ignition coils
9 Remove exhaust manifold (156)

NOTE:
- Take both exhaust manifolds down and out.
- Installation: Replace nuts (156/1) and gaskets (156/5).

- Nut to exhaust manifold = 16 Nm

NOTE:
- If bolts at flange connection of front exhaust system/exhaust manifold are stiff, or if thread is damaged:
- Replace rivet nuts in exhaust manifold.

- Caulking bolt: See Special Tools below.
- Flange connection of exhaust manifold or front exhaust pipes = 20 Nm

10 Install in the reverse order
11 Perform basic programming
- Only if the ground line of the battery was disconnected.
12 Read out DTC memory with STAR DIAGNOSIS and erase if necessary

NOTE: Only if the ground line of the battery was disconnected.
