Replace front crankshaft radial seal

Shown On Engine 112 In Model 203:

DANGER:
- Lethal injuries are possible if vehicle slips off of lifting platform.
- Align vehicle between the columns of the hydraulic hoist and position the four support plates below the hoist support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

1 Connect quiescent current retention unit.

DANGER:
- Risk of explosion from hydrogen gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns from swallowing battery electrolyte. Risk of injury to eyes and skin suffering caustic burns from battery electrolyte or from contact with damaged lead acid batteries.
- No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking. Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing and glasses. Pour battery electrolyte only into suitable and appropriately marked containers.

2 Disconnect battery ground line.

NOTE:
- Turn key in electronic ignition switch (EIS) to position "0". Key cannot be withdrawn.
- Vehicle with code (889) Keyless Go: Turn off engine, remove Keyless Go card from the vehicle and keep out of transmission range.
- Installation: Following hook-up, read out fault memory, set clock time on instrument cluster, encode radio, normalize power windows and activate steering angle sensor.
- Vehicles with stationary heater: set stationary heater clock time.

CAUTION: Model 209, 211: Do not connect quiescent current retention unit, otherwise this may cause damage to the control modules!

3 Remove engine compartment paneling

NOTE:
Except model 230.475

4 Remove air baffle
- Model 163 with engine 113.981

5 Remove front air filter cover or engine cover

NOTE: Model 211.061/065/070/076 Unclip cover on front face of engine.

6 Remove fan shroud (3) with electric fan (1).
7 Remove poly-V-belt for compressor.
8 Remove poly-V-belt (2).
9 Remove central bolt (4).

CAUTION: Transmission 722.6: Do not counterhold at ring gear (with retaining lock) in order to remove the central bolt (4)! Due to the large torque, it must be counterheld at the spokes of the belt pulley/vibration damper (5).

NOTE: Installation: Oil thread of center bolt (4). Measure length of center bolt (4) (bolt head contact surface to end of shank). Center bolt (4) may be used up to shank length of max. 78 mm.

10 Remove belt pulley/vibration damper (5)

NOTE:
- Except model 203.
- Inspect contact surface of hub for signs of wear.

11 Remove crankshaft radial sealing ring (7)

NOTE:
- Press out with a screwdriver.
- Do not damage the crankshaft and mounting bore for the crankshaft radial sealing ring (7). Use a clean rag as a base.
- Circumference and sealing lip of crankshaft sealing ring (7) as well as the mating contact surface on the vibration damper must be free of oil and grease.
- Installation: Install front crankshaft radial sealing ring (7) with the aid of the sleeve (6).
- Do not coat crankshaft radial sealing ring (7) with sealing compound.

12 Install in the reverse order.

DANGER:
- Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury as working around the engine during startup or while running may result in contusions and burns.
- Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving off by itself. Wear closed and close-fitting work clothes. Do not grasp hot or rotating parts.

13 Check oil viscosity after performing engine test run.

NOTE: Determine oil leak after spraying the cleaned and dried surrounding area with MB "white" contrast spray.

14 Prepare electrical system for operation.

NOTE: Perform basic programming (normalize windows and sliding roof, etc.).
