Component Identification:
1. Pass trailer hitch wiring harness (20) through existing hole under left taillamp and seal with grommet (33).
2. Route trailer hitch wiring harness (20) along trailer hitch crossmember (1) and fasten with clips to existing stud (enlarged view).
3. Guide the trailer hitch socket (13-pin) (X58) to the bracket beneath the trailer hitch crossmember (1).
4. Route the trailer hitch wiring harness (20) along existing wiring to the installation point of the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2) and fix in place.
The hole must be sealed with a grommet (33) to prevent water entry.
5. Connect brown cable (br) to left taillamp trunk ground (W6/1) (detail).
6. Plug the violet, 5-pin coupling (vi) of the trailer hitch wiring harness (20) in the violet slot (15) of the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2).
The violet coupling (vi) is coded.
7. Plug the turquoise-colored and black fuse holder for fuse 17 (N10/2f17) and fuse 18 (N10/2f18) into the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2) and insert a 20A fuse for fuse 17 (N10/2f17).
Fuse 17 (N10/2f17): Turquoise-colored holder with red/green line, Fuse 18 (N10/2f18): Black holder with red/yellow line
Connect fuse 18 (N10/2f18) only if trailer is being towed, otherwise an external consumer could drain the battery.
8. Clip the trailer recognition control unit (N28/1) into an existing lug on the back of the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2).
9. Secure the trailer recognition control unit (N28/1) using a sheet-metal screw 5 x 10 (50).
10. Connect the white, 14-pin coupling and black 6-pin coupling of the trailer hitch wiring harness (20) to the trailer recognition control unit (N28/1).
The lever must be pushed in the direction of the arrow to lock the 16-pin coupling.
11. Place the 13-pin trailer hitch socket (X58) in the socket carrier (11).
12. Push the seal (12) onto the 13-pin trailer hitch socket (X58).
13. Place the 13-pin trailer hitch socket (X58) in the socket housing (10).
14. Push grommet (13) onto the socket housing (10).
It should be ensured that the sealing lip of the grommet (13) abuts the socket housing (10) without any creases.
15. Attach trailer hitch socket (13-pin) (X58) to trailer hitch bracket with three sheet metal screws, 4.8 x 32.
16. Use a cable tie (arrow) to fasten the trailer hitch wiring harness (20) to the socket bracket.
The trailer hitch wiring harness (20) must be routed on the left along the bracket.
17. Align trailer hitch wiring harness (20) as per the pictures of the trailer hitch socket (13-pin) (X58) coming from the front of the trailer hitch crossmember.
18. Fit the filling piece (35) to the trailer hitch crossmember (1) as per the picture.
