Component Identification:
With the aid of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) the following components can be operated centrally:
^ Integral radio tuner
^ Integrated CD drive
^ Navigation with dynamic route guidance
^ Dynamic navigation system Germany
^ CD changer (code (819a))
^ D-net portable CTEL (D2B) for code (317), MB Standard telephone for code (853) or MB portable CTEL for code (854)
^ TV tuner for code (860)
^ Sound system for code (810)
^ Voice control system (VCS) for code (813)
On model 203 an electrical connection on the front side of the glove compartment enables audio signals from a Walkman to be transmitted to the radio.
On models 209 the jack socket on the front side of the glove box for connection of an external Walkman is no longer applicable.
The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) is the central component in the COMAND system. It contains a video-capable LCD color display for showing information such as operating menus, map data for the navigation and television screen. It is operated by means of fixed function keys and 2 rotary controls as well as menu-guided in the display.
Several functions can also be activated with the aid of the push buttons on the multifunction steering wheel (MFL). It should be noted that all pushbutton operations on the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) are processed first by the instrument cluster (A1).
The instrument cluster (A1) links the incoming pushbutton operations with the current menu setting in the multifunction display (A1p13) and, where applicable, it then transmits a corresponding CAN message to the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).
The vehicle can also be equipped optionally with an infrared remote control for issuing commands from the rear passenger compartment and with code (813) a voice control system (VCS) for the telephone and several audio functions, which serve to enhance the operating convenience level yet further.
COMAND bus system
The digital components in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) are interlinked through a bus system. The bus system is used to transmit data (control commands and useful information) between the various system components.
The individual components operate with different data formats and have different requirements in terms of transmission speed and reliability.
For this reason, various bus systems have been installed. These include the following:
^ Digital Data Bus (D2B)
The D2B is used to exchange data between the sound amplifier (A2/13), CD player with changer (in glove compartment) (A2/6) the telephone system and, if present, the voice control system (A35/11). In the process, both control data and audio signals are transmitted (music from CD changer, voice when phoning).
^ Controller Area Network bus Class B (interior) (CAN-B)
Data interchange with the instrument cluster takes place over CAN-B (A1). Thus the instrument cluster (A1) receives the audio, telephone and navigation data from the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) for the multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1) as well as the time via the CAN-B.
^ Robert Bosch CAN (RB-CAN)
The RB CAN which is independent of the CAN-B serves to exchange data between the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) with the optional components TV tuner (A2/42) on model 209 and as from 1.7.02 for model 203.
^ CAN-Micro controller Net (CAN-MC Net)
The CAN MC Net, which is independent of the CAN-B, serves to exchange data between the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) with the optional components TV tuner (A2/42) on model 209 and as from 1.7.02 for model 203.
