COMAND HEAD UNIT FLASH UPDATE

Note:
This Service Campaign supersedes DTB 82.85/412

Performing this Campaign with DTB 82.85/412, in any combination, will result in a charge back of the DTB.

This Service Campaign has been initiated because DCAG has determined that on certain mentioned model 215 and 220 vehicles (see VIN range below), a software update for COMAND must be carried out for the following:

^ COMAND head unit reset at MOST wake up

^ Upon opening the vehicle door, the Mercedes-Benz star flashes on and off a couple of times.

^ System not stable and Head Unit resets during normal operation

Please review the Effective Serial Number chart located below and if necessary repair the subject vehicles during the vehicle's next service.

Prior to performing this Service Campaign:

^ Please check VMI to insure the vehicle is involved and to determine if the vehicle has been previously repaired.

^ Please review the entire Service Campaign bulletin.

Approximately 1,338 vehicles are affected.

Procedure

Note:
^ STAR Diagnosis DAS software 10/04 with the patch 2004-10-26-0307 (or later DAS release) must be on SDS prior to performing this campaign and two separate SD flash CD's are required:

^ SDflash Release CD: 000 448 0000 0005 or later (insert into Star Diagnosis CD drive as indicated in the following steps).

^ SDflash Telematics Release CD: 211 827 80 59 (insert into the COMAND Head Unit [HD] drive when prompted by SDS).

^ Preflash requirements:

^ Battery voltage > 12.5 volts,

^ Battery charger connected to vehicle's battery.

^ Turn off all unnecessary electrical consumers (e.g.: A/C, lights, etc.)

1. Connect SDS to vehicle through the 16 pin diagnostic connector (X11/4).

2. Insert SDflash Release CD into Star Diagnosis.

3. Navigate through the following screen menus in DAS to flash COMAND:

Quick test (do not erase fault codes at this time)/COMAND-COMAND (Display and operating unit)/Initial start-up/Control Module programming (select: Determination of new control unit software and subsequent control unit programming).

4. Follow DAS on-screen instructions.

Note:
^ To load Telematics CD into head unit (HU), press any button on HU.

^ During the update process which will take approximately 30 minutes, do not touch any buttons on the head unit as the update is a very sensitive process.

^ Remove SDflash Telematics CD from head unit (HU) after HU indicates flash is complete and CD is ejected.

5. Erase fault memory.

6. Check software status version after performing COMAND flash update (the software status should be 30104).
