Cockpit Management and Data System (COMMAND), Function

Cockpit Management And Data System (COMAND), Function

The following systems can be controlled centrally with the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3):
- Radio
- Integrated CD drive for navigation/audio function
- CD changer (optional)
- BOSE sound system (optional)
- Navigation with dynamic route guidance
- Telephone (optional)
- TV tuner and multistandard decoder (optional)
- Voice control (optional)
- TMC and TCS (dynamic route guidance in Germany)

NOTE: The audio signals from a walkman can be transferred to the Comand module with the AUX connector in the glove compartment.

Block Diagram Of Entire COMAND System:

The COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) is the central component in the COMAND system. It has a graphic and video compatible 5 inch LCD color display. This is used for display of control menus, map data for navigation and the television picture. It is operated via function buttons and two rotary sensors and menu-guided on the display.

Some functions can be activated with the aid of the buttons on the multifunction steering wheel. It should be noted that all pushbutton operations on the multifunction steering wheel are read in first by the instrument cluster (A1). The instrument cluster (A1) links the incoming pushbutton operations with the current menu setting in the multifunction display and, where applicable, it then transmits a corresponding CAN message to the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3).

Optional equipment:
- Infrared remote control
- CD changer (code 819a)
- Voice control (code 813)
- BOSE sound system (code 810)
- TV tuner (code 860)

COMAND bus system
The digital components of the COMAND are interlinked with one another by the digital data bus (D2B) and an electric wake-up signal. Data (control commands and information) is transferred between the various system components via the (D2B). Various information systems are used for transfer of the control and display information (see also block diagram):
- Digital Data Bus (D2B)
- Interior CAN bus.
- CAN-MCNet (CAN microcontroller network)

Digital data bus (D2B)
The D2B bus is used for transfer of data between the
- Sound amplifier (A2/13)
- CD player with changer (in trunk) (A2/6)
- Telephone system
- Voice control system control module (A35/11) depending on the equipment

In doing so both the control data and the actual audio signals (music from the CD changer, voice when telephoning) are transferred.

Passenger compartment CAN bus
- The passenger compartment CAN bus is used for Data exchange with the instrument cluster A1), from COMAND the instrument cluster (A1) receives the audio, telephone and navigation data for the left multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1) and the time via this bus.

CAN-MCNet (CAN microcontroller network)
- The CAN-MCNet which is independent of the passenger compartment CAN bus serves for data exchange between the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) and the optional TV tuner (A2/42) component.
