Remove/install Propeller Shaft







CAUTION: See notes on self-locking nuts and bolts

DANGER:
- Lethal injuries are possible if vehicle slips off of lifting platform
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

1 Raise vehicle.
2 Remove exhaust system (105) at flange connection.
3 Remove exhaust shielding plate (105c)

NOTE: Installation: Replace sheet metal nuts if necessary.

4 Remove bottom part of noise encapsulation
5 Remove rear engine crossmember and rear engine mount
6.1 Unscrew crossmember (40) at floor shift.
6.2 Detach front reinforcement brace below propeller shaft

NOTE: Model 203 with 4MATIC: it is not necessary to detach the exhaust shielding plate for the rear engine mount from the reinforcement brace.

7 Slacken bolts of propeller shaft intermediate bearing (7)
8 Disconnect front propeller shaft (1) at transmission

NOTE:
- The flexible coupling remains on the propeller shaft.
- Installation: mount front propeller shaft at transmission

9 Detach rear propeller shaft (2) from rear axle center assembly

NOTE:
- The flexible coupling remains on the propeller shaft.
- Installation: mount rear propeller shaft at rear axle center assembly

10 Loosen fitted sleeves in flexible coupling
11 Unscrew bolts of propeller shaft intermediate bearing (7)

NOTE: Installation: mount propeller shaft intermediate bearing

12 Pull propeller shaft (1, 2) off centering pin at transmission and at rear axle center assembly and remove from the back

NOTE: Installation: Fill cavities of both centering sleeves with multi-purpose grease

13 Detach front and rear propeller shaft from slide connection

NOTE:
- Only if necessary.
- Installation: Coat splined shaft profile with Molykote grease.

14 Check flexible couplings, centering sleeves and propeller shaft intermediate bearing (7) for wear

NOTE: Replace if necessary: Remove/install propeller shaft intermediate bearing and replace grooved ball bearing

15 Check centering sleeves for wear

NOTE: Replace if necessary, Install new centering sleeve

16 Check flexible coupling of front propeller shaft for wear
17 Check flexible coupling of rear propeller shaft for wear
18 Install in the reverse order
