AR35.31-P-0530P Replace Radial Seal at Drive Pinion (Rear Axle Installed)



Replace Radial Seal At Drive Pinion (rear Axle Center Assembly Installed)







DANGER:
- Risk of death. Death may result if vehicle slips or topples from the lifting platform.
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.


1 Remove rear wheels Remove/install wheels, rotate if necessary
- Not on rear axle center assembly with 187 mm dia. ring gear.
2 Press in brake pads on rear fixed caliper units
- Not on rear axle center assembly with 187 mm dia. ring gear

NOTE: Ensure clearance of brake discs.

3 Drain rear axle oil
4 Remove exhaust system (105) from flange
5 Remove exhaust heat shield (105c)
6 Unscrew bolts from center driveshaft bearing support (106a)

NOTE: Installation: Only tighten the bolts of the propeller shaft intermediate bearing after attaching the flexible coupling to the rear axle center assembly

7 Detach rear propeller shaft assembly (106) from rear axle center assembly

NOTE:
- Flexible disk remains on propeller shaft
- Installation- Connect rear propeller shaft to rear axle center assembly

8 Loosen fitted sleeves on flexible couplings
9 Pull the rear propeller shaft (106) off the front propeller shaft (106c)

NOTE: Installation: Connect sections of propeller shaft Long-term grease (NLGI grade 2)

10 Measuring and noting total friction torque of drive pinion
- Not on rear axle center assemblies with 187 mm dia ring gear

NOTE: Move rear axle shafts to approximately horizontal position If necessary, pre-tension both rear springs with spring compressor

11.1 Slacken and unscrew twelve-point collared nut (40)
- On rear axle center assemblies with 185, 198, 210 mm dia ring gear

NOTE:
- Do no remove collar protection when slackening twelve-point collared nut
- Installation: Replace twelve-point collar nut and tighten in stages until the friction torque measured previously is reached
- Installation: Secure twelve-point collar

11.2 Slacken and unscrew twelve-point collared nut (40)
- On rear axle center assemblies with 187 mm dia ring gear.

NOTE:
- Do no remove collar protection when slackening twelve-point collared nut.
- Installation: Replace twelve-point collar nut.

12 Detach joint flange (41)

NOTE: If necessary, use puller.

13 Press out radial seal ring (42) using a suitable tool

NOTE:
- Installation: Replace radial sealing ring and coat the lip with universal hypoid transmission oil.
- Universal hypoid gear oil

14 Install in the reverse order
15 If necessary, replace breather of rear axle center assembly
16 Check rear axle center assembly oil level, top up if necessary
