AR46.10-P-0400Q Remove/Install Mechanically Adjustable Jacket Tube
DANGER:
- Lethal injuries are possible if vehicle slips off of lifting platform.
- Align vehicle between the columns of the hydraulic hoist and position the four support plates below the hoist support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
- Risk of explosion from hydrogen gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns from swallowing battery electrolyte. Risk of injury to eyes and skin suffering caustic burns from battery electrolyte or from contact with damaged lead acid batteries.
- No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing and glasses. Pour battery electrolyte only into suitable and appropriately marked container.
CAUTION:
- Installation: Replace self-locking nuts and bolts.
1 Disconnect ground cable of battery.
CAUTION: Model 209: Do not connect quiescent current retention unit as this may cause interference in the control module.
2 Extend adjustable steering column completely, push out.
NOTE: Necessary for separation of steering coupling (25).
3 Position steering wheel horizontal (front wheels in straight-ahead position)
CAUTION: The steering wheel must not be turned with the steering coupling (25) detached otherwise the contact spiral will be destroyed.
4 Remove engine compartment paneling
5 Unscrew bolt of steering coupling to steering shaft (25a)
6 Pull lower steering shaft (80a) up and out of steering coupling (25)
CAUTION: Do not use force (hammer blows, a lot of leverage) as the lower steering shaft (80a) is sensitive to the effects of side force and can be damaged.
NOTE:
- Installation: Insert lower steering shaft (80a) all the way into the steering coupling (25), at the same time observe the studs of the steering coupling (25) and the groove of the lower steering shaft (80a).
- Installation if the rack-and-pinion steering is positioned incorrectly, it must be centered again.
DANGER:
- Risk of injury. Injuries may result when performing testing or repair work on airbag or emergency tensioning retractor units.
- Store airbag unit with expulsion area on top, do not subject to temperatures above 100 degrees C. When working on these units, disconnect the power supply.
7 Remove steering wheel.
CAUTION: Important instructions for performing repair, body work and welding on vehicles with airbags or belt tensioner units.
NOTE: Front wheels in straight-ahead position
8 Slacken bolt (2) of steering column module (N80)
9 Remove complete steering column module (N80) with combination switches and clock spring contact.
NOTE:
- Detach steering column module (N80) with a strong pull from the steering column (arrow).
- Secure clock spring contact with pin against twisting. The recess clearance (3) is located on the clock spring contact at approx 4 o'clock. The pin is included in the repair kit of the clock spring contact
10 Remove instrument cluster
11 Remove cover below instrument panel (left)
12 Remove absorber (foam balls) on left-hand side below instrument panel.
NOTE: Removal:Pay attention to the installation position of the absorbers
13 Disconnect electric steering lock control module connector (N26/5)
14 Swing toggle (99f) from the steering column adjustment (4) to the front, until it latches at the handle arm (99e)
15 Separate handle arm (99e) from steering column adjustment (4)
NOTE: Press handle arm (99e) with a screwdriver downward and unlatch
16 Unscrew lower bolt of steering column adjustment (91 b) at body.
17 Unscrew upper bolts of steering column adjustment (91a) at body.
NOTE:
- Installation: Put on bolts (the jacket tube must remain a flexible length)
- Tighten at first the upper bolts of the steering column adjustment (91a)
18 Pull jacket tube (71) with lower steering shaft (80a) upward, until the lug of the steering column adjustment (4) is extended out of the guide hole
19 Slide jacket tube (71) with lower steering shaft (80a) downward and put down to the left
20 Remove side cover
NOTE: At left instrument panel bottom section
21 Unscrew fuse board (5)
22 Unhinge Bowden cable of parking brake
23 Remove release lever of parking brake
24 Unscrew bolt of light switch module
NOTE: The bolt is located in the recess of the parking brake release lever
25 Disconnect electrical coupling of light switch module
26 Unclip light switch module and take out
NOTE: Press together two spring links (left and right) of the light switch module
27 Slacken bolts of instrument panel (6)
28 Remove jacket tube (71).
NOTE:
- Remove jacket tube (71) toward bottom through slightly lifting the instrument panel
