Campaign - Coolant Strength Inspection

FILE:
SERVICE: GROUP 00 OF SERVICE INFORMATION BINDER
PARTS: GROUP I OF INFORMATION _ PARTS & ACCESSORIES BINDER

Campaign No. 2005090016
October 2005

TO: ALL MERCEDES-BENZ CENTERS

SUBJECT:
MODELS 203/209 MODEL YEAR 2004
CHECK COOLANT STRENGTH AND ADJUST IF NECESSARY

This Service Campaign has been initiated because DCAG has determined that on the affected vehicles (see VIN range below) the antifreeze content may not be sufficient. Dealers will check the strength of the antifreeze and add additional coolant as necessary.

Please review the Effective Serial Number chart located below and if necessary repair the subject vehicles during the vehicle's next service.

Prior to performing this Service Campaign:

^ Please check VMI to insure the vehicle is involved and to determine if the vehicle has been previously repaired.

^ Please review the entire Service Campaign bulletin.

Approximately 191 vehicles are affected.

Effective Serial Number Range

Note:
Every vehicle in the VIN range may not be included in the campaign. VMI must always be checked before performing campaigns to verify that the campaign is required on a specific vehicle. VMI always overrides the bulletin in reference to a specific vehicle's inclusion in a particular campaign. Please also note that Recall and Service Campaigns do not expire and may also be performed on a vehicle with a vehicle status indicator.

Procedure

WARNING!
^ Risk of injury to skin and eyes caused by scalding from contact with hot coolant spray.

^ Do not open cooling system if engine coolant temperature is above 90°C. Wear protective clothing, gloves and eye protection.

^ When opening cooling system (removing pressure cap), turn cap slowly to allow gradual pressure release.

1. Check coolant strength:

^ Remove pressure cap (1, Figure 1) from expansion tank (2).

^ Check coolant strength using an available coolant tester (e.g., refractometer).

^ If coolant is weaker than -37 °C protection (-.36 °C, -.35 °C, etc.) proceed to step 2.

Note:
Coolant should provide antifreeze protection down to at least -37 °C (50% by volume).

^ If coolant strength is within specifications, reinstall pressure cap (1), campaign is complete.

2. Remove 1.5 L of coolant from expansion reservoir (2) using a fluid removal device (suction gun, coolant exchanger system, etc.).

Note:
Dispose of used coolant properly.

3. Add 1.5 L of new coolant to expansion reservoir (2).

4. Reinstall pressure cap (1) to expansion tank.
