High-Pitched Whining Noise Heard on Telephone/VCS/Tele Aid Calls

If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles that a high-pitched whining noise is heard throughout a telephone call using voice control or during a TeleAid call, install the dedicated fuel pump harness and relay indicated below.

1. To set up installation of the fuel pump harness and relay, the following preparation needs to be completed to expose the wiring:

a) Remove paneling in trunk. Refer to WIS Document AR68.30-P-4600M.

b) Remove rear seat cushion. Refer to WIS documents AR91.12-P-1020M, AR91.12-P-1020MA, or AR91.12-P-1020MB.

c) Remove seat adjuster at rear seat. Refer to WIS document AR91.12-P-1520M.

Note:
Refer to illustrations for an overview of the wiring harness (Figure 9 - Models 220.176 and 215.376 and Figure 10 - Models 220.174 and 215.374) and overview of the connector numbers (Figure 11 - Models 220.176 and 215.376 and Figure 12 - Models 220.174 and 215.374).

2. Connect connector # 1 (power supply) to the prefuse box on the right side of the trunk after fuse 33 (F33).

3. Drill a hole (diameter 3.5 mm) for mounting the carrier of fuse/relays. Mount the fuse and relay box of the wiring harness to the right side of the trunk (Figure 1). Please use a screw, part no. N914128 004200, to mount the new fuse and relay box.

4. Unplug pin 14 (green/black) from the connector (connector# I1) of the SRB/SAM (fuse and relay box under the rear seat) and plug this pin into the connector # 2 on the pin position # 1 (For Models 220.176 and 215.376 refer to Figure 2, for Models 220.174 and 215.374 refer to Figure 3).

5. Unplug pin 13 (red/blue) from the connector (connector# I1) of the SRB/SAM (fuse and relay box under the rear seat) and plug this pin into the connector # 2 on the pin position # 2 (For Models 220.176 and 215.376 refer to Figure 2, for Models 220.174 and 215.374 refer to Figure 3).

6. For Models 220.174 and 215.374, unplug pin 11 (colored blue/white) from the connector (connector# I1) of the SRB/SAM (fuse and relay box under the rear seat) and plug this pin into the connector # 2 on the pin position # 3 (Figure 3).

7. Connect connector # 2 to connector # 3 of the fuel pump wiring harness.

8. Connect ground connector # 4 to the vehicle body in the rear by the right tail light (Figure 4). Also for 220.174 and 215.374, connect connector # 5 to battery positive.

9. Integrate the harness of the connector # 5 (connection to the fuel pump control unit) in the original vehicle wiring harness under the rear seat and assure that is passes through the hole in floor assembly under the right rear seat (Figure 5).

10. Connect connector # 5 to the fuel pump control unit.

11. Fasten the whole wiring harness with cable ties, part no. A004 997 98 90, to the original wiring harness. (Figure 6).

12. IMPORTANT:
Information of the new relays and fuse position has to be printed and attached to original information for relays and fuses which is inside of the vehicle (Figure 7 - Models 220.176 and 215.376 and Figure 8 - Models 220.174 and 215.374).

13. Connect SDS, erase codes.

14. Perform short test. Ensure that there are no fault codes present.

15. Disconnect SDS.

16. Perform a test call to verify that high pitched whine is no longer present.
