COMAND Intermittently Inoperative
If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of the audio system having any of the below complaints, prior to replacing any parts check the software version of the Head Unit. If the software version is earlier than 17/04, the head unit software needs to be updated per the below procedure. If the software version is 17/04 or later, please contact the Enhanced Diagnostic Assistance Center for further diagnosis.
^ DTMF Tones are extremely loud when dialing a phone number
^ Integration of coordinate destination input
^ Fix for (no audio) problem especially at start-up
^ Better scroll performance in Navi map
^ Fix (missing blue route) during active Route Guidance
^ Audio volume control behavior during start-up
^ Text change (enter unlock code)
^ Correction of entering "pauses" and "waits" for the phone number entry
^ T-Navigator empty at start-up (all applications)
^ Head unit intermittently does not turn on
^ Head unit shows message "sound not available"
^ Sound from two different audio sources playing at the same time.
Note:
The update requires Star Diagnosis 08/04 or newer and two separate CD's: 1) SDflash Release CD (00044800000003 or later) and 2) SDflash Telematics Release CD (211 827 79 59). The SDflash Release CD will be installed in the Star Diagnosis CD drive and the SDflash Telematics CD will be inserted in the COMAND head unit CD drive. Follow the installation order outlined below.
To Update Head Unit:
1. Start Star Diagnosis
2. Insert SDflash Release CD into Star Diagnosis CD drive
3. Select proper model
4. Select Control Units
5. Select Information and communication
6. Select Audio, video, navigation and telematics
7. Select COMAND/COMAND Japan
8. Select Initial start-up
9. Select Control unit programming
10. Select SDflash Release CD
11. If newer software is found for COMAND head unit then prompt will instruct to load SDflash Telematics CD into COMAND's CD drive.
12. Follow prompts from STAR DIAGNOSIS
Note:
During the update process which will take approximately 30 minutes, do not touch any buttons on the head unit as the update is a very sensitive process.
13. Clear fault memory after successful programming.
After updating the Head Unit please check software status version. The software status should be 17/04.
To Check Software Version of the Head Unit:
^ Select the correct model
^ Select Control Units
^ Select Information and communication
^ Select Audio, video, navigation and telematics
^ Select Comand/Audio
^ Select Control unit version
Note:
After completed software update HU may not show "Diagnosis" and in order to check software version it maybe necessary to go to "Audio, video, navigation and telematics" menu and select COMAND again, otherwise STAR DIAGNOSIS may report COMMUNICATION ERROR"

The following allowable labor operations should be used when submitting a warranty claim for this repair.
