Left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1) and right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2)

These are activated differently according to function:
- When direction signaling, either the left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1) or the right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2) in the instrument cluster (A1) is activated. The signal to activate the left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1) or the right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2) comes via the Controller Area Network bus class B (interior) (CAN-B) from the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2). If one of the turn signal lamps fails, the left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1) or the right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2) is activated at double frequency.
- When the hazard warning flasher is activated the left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1) and the right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2) are always activated by the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2). For this purpose the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2) receives an appropriate message from the upper control panel control unit (N72/1) via CAN-B.
- On vehicles with Code (551) Anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW]) the left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1) and the right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2) are always activated when the Anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW]) is flashing. The signal comes via the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2).
- On vehicles with Code (450) Taxi version the left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1) and the right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2) are always activated in the instrument cluster (A1) by the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2) when flashing for special functions. For this purpose the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2) receives a corresponding message from the special vehicle multifunction control unit (SVMCU [MSS]) (N26/9) via the CAN-B.

While direction signaling is only possible when circuit 15 is switched ON, the other types of turn signal modes are also possible when circuit 15 is switched OFF. An acoustic signal accompanies the rhythmic flashing of the indicator lamp (A1h2).

High beam indicator lamp (A1e3)
The signal to actuate the high beam indicator lamp (A1e3) comes via the CAN-B from the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1).

Fuel reserve warning light (A1e4)
The fuel reserve warning lamp (A1e4) is actuated as soon as the reserve range is reached. Control of this lamp is linked to the fuel level and reserve indicator (A1p2).

Brake fluid and parking brake warning lamp (A1e7)
The brake fluid and parking brake warning lamp (A1e7) is actuated, if the parking brake is not released or the minimum brake fluid level is dropped below.
In both cases the signal to actuate the brake fluid and parking brake warning lamp (A1e7) comes from the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1).

Seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) except Code (494) USA version and except Code (498) Japan version

The seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) is activated as follows:
- The seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) lights up if the vehicle speed is greater than 25 km/h and the driver seat belt buckle restraint systems switch (S68/3) is not closed with "Circuit 61 ON" (engine running). The seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) goes out as soon as the driver seat belt buckle restraint systems switch (S68/3) is closed.
- The seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) lights up if the vehicle speed is greater than 25 km/h, the front passenger seat occupied and child seat recognition sensor (B48) has detected a person or a child seat on the front passenger seat and the front passenger seat belt buckle restraint systems switch (S68/4) is not closed with "Circuit 61 ON". The seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) goes out as soon as the front passenger seat belt buckle restraint systems switch (S68/4) is closed.

The signal to activate the seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) comes via the CAN-B from the restraint systems control unit (N2/7). When the seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) is activated a warning chime sequence sounds at the same time.
The warning tone sequence of the seat belt reminder warning is switched off as soon as the driver and/or front passenger have fastened their seat belts. The maximum actuation time of t = 93 seconds continues running in the background. If a belt is unfastened within this time, the warning chime sequence is output again.

The seat belt reminder warning is issued once for the journey, but can be set active again if one of the following events occurs:
- Vehicle speed higher than 5 km/h
- Status change of driver door ("OPEN", "CLOSED")

Seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) with Code (494) USA version
The seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) lights up for 6 s with "Circuit 61 ON" (engine running) if the seat belt buckle of the driver seat is not inserted. In addition a warning tone sounds for 6 seconds. The signal to activate the seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) comes via the CAN-B from the restraint systems control unit (N2/7).

Seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) with Code (498) Japan version
The seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) lights up for 6 s with "Circuit 15 ON" if the seat belt buckle of the driver seat is not inserted. In addition a warning tone sounds for 6 seconds. The signal to activate the seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) comes via the CAN-B from the restraint systems control unit (N2/7).
If the driver seat belt buckle restraint systems switch (S68/3) is closed, the warning tone and warning lamp are deactivated.

Airbag indicator and warning lamp (A1e15)
The airbag indicator and warning lamp (A1e15) is triggered when there is a fault in the supplemental restraint system (SRS). The signal to activate the airbag indicator and warning lamp (A1e15) comes via the CAN-B from the restraint systems control unit (N2/7).

Preglow indicator lamp (A1e16)
The preglow indicator lamp (A1e16) is only installed on vehicles with a diesel engine. It is actuated with "circuit 15 ON" as long as the preheating time runs. The signal to activate the preglow indicator lamp (A1e16) comes via the Controller Area Network bus class C (engine compartment) (CAN-C) from the CDI control unit (N3/9). If there is a defect in the preglow indicator lamp (A1e16) a fault code is set in the instrument cluster (A1) and an appropriate message is sent to the CDI control unit (N3/9) via the CAN-C. However, no fault message appears in the multifunction display (A1p13).

ABS indicator lamp (A1e17)
The ABS indicator lamp (A1e17) is activated if there is a fault in the antilock brake system (ABS). The signal to activate the ABS indicator lamp (A1e17) comes via the CAN-C from the ESP and BAS control unit (N47-5).

ESP warning lamp (A1e41)
The ESP warning lamp (A1e41) is activated as soon as the electronic stability program (ESP) intervenes in the driving process.
The signal to activate the ESP warning lamp (A1e41) comes via the CAN-C from the ESP and BAS control unit (N47-5).

Coolant temperature warning lamp (A1e54)
The coolant temperature warning lamp (A1e54) is activated as soon as an engine-critical overtemperature is reached. Control of this lamp is linked to the coolant temperature display (A1p1).

Engine diagnosis indicator lamp (A1e58)
The engine diagnosis indicator lamp (A1e58) is activated if there are problems in the injection system, in the ignition system or in the exhaust system.
The signal to activate the engine diagnosis indicator lamp (A1e58) comes via CAN-C from the ME control unit (N3/10) or from the CDI control unit (N3/9).

With some indicator and warning lamps, a fault message appears in the multifunction display (A1p13) in parallel with their activation. Although most messages in the multifunction display (A1p13) can be acknowledged, the indicator and warning lamps remain illuminated as long as the problem exists. Messages cannot be acknowledged.
All indicator and warning lamps in the instrument cluster (A1) are equipped with light emitting diodes (LED).

Apart from the actuations described above all the indicator lamps and warning lamps are actuated on the indicator lamp test with the following exceptions:
- left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1)
- Right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2)
- High beam indicator lamp (A1e3)
- Seat belt reminder light (A1e9)
- preglow indicator lamp (A1e16)
