Operation of the Distronic
The operation is performed with the variable cruise control pushbutton switch (S40/4), if the LIM indicator lamp is switched off in the variable cruise control pushbutton switch.
(USA) The system is operated with the cruise control switch (S40)
Display in instrument cluster
The display of all the driver information of relevance for the Distronic is split over the two oval multifunction displays (A1p13 and A1p15) in the instrument cluster (A1).
If the Distronic is activated e.g. at 130km/h, the current set speed is shown constantly in the status line (1) of the right multifunction display.
In the right multifunction display the driver's own vehicle (2) is shown on the right edge of the screen, as well as a distance scale (3) to the vehicle ahead. The bar (5) below the distance scale marks the target distance selected with the Distronic DTR distance potentiometer.
If the Distronic detects a vehicle ahead moving at a slower speed, the light-blue DTR warning and indicator light (A1e59) (7) comes on and a second vehicle (4) appears in the right multifunction display at the left of the screen, which moves slowly across the distance scale.
At the same time, the Distronic reduces the speed of its own vehicle until the selected specified distance is reached.
If the distance to a vehicle ahead is less than the specified distance, for example because of a vehicle suddenly moving in after changing lanes, the red DTR warning and indicator lamp (A1e59) (6) comes on. In addition an intermittent signal (takeover signal) sounds, if this has been activated with the distance warning function switch.
The switch status of the audible warning function can also be recognized from the loudspeaker symbol (8) in the right multifunction display.
The Distronic permits a vehicle acceleration of maximum 1m/s2.
To accelerate the vehicle even faster, the system is switched off as soon as the accelerator pedal is operated. In this case, the "DTR passive" warning is output to the driver in the status line (1) of the left multifunction display.
The "DTR passive" warning also appears if the Distronic is switched on and the accelerator pedal is not fully released. No distance control is then performed in this case to a vehicle ahead which is moving at a slower speed.
Variable speed limit, without (USA)
1. Vehicles fitted with Distronic
The set vehicle limit speed is always maintained by the system (on downhill stretches by activating the brakes).
The current set speed in this case is shown constantly in the status line (1) of the left multifunction display.
The variable speed limiter can be deactivated by means of the "kickdown" position of the accelerator pedal. In this case, the speed limit shown in the left multifunction display also goes out.
2. Vehicles not fitted with Distronic
If the vehicle speed limiter is activated (yellow LED, variable speed limiter (S40/4v1) comes on) the set vehicle speed limit is displayed in the left multifunction display.
If the current speed limit is exceeded, for example on a steep downhill stretch, the message "LIMIT EXCEEDED" appears in the right multifunction display for about 5 seconds and a warning signal sounds in addition.
Permant speed limit
For the winter tire operation, the maximum speed of the vehicle can be permanently limited, e. g. to 210 km/h.
If the permanent speed limiter is activated, the message "WINTER TIRE LIMIT" appears in the left multifunction display shortly before the set speed limit is reached and in the right multifunction display according to the speed limit (e.g. 210 km/h).
This message also appears for a short time if the selected variable speed limit is above the set permanent speed.
