Campaign No. 2002090005
December 2002

FILE:
SERVICE:
GROUP 00 OF SERVICE INFORMATION BINDER

PARTS:
GROUP I OF INFORMATION - PARTS & ACCESSORIES BINDER

TO: ALL MERCEDES-BENZ CENTERS

SUBJECT:
MODEL 211
FLEXIBLE SERVICE SYSTEM PLUS (FSS +) MAINTENANCE INTERVALS DO NOT
CORRESPOND TO MBUSA CRITERIA, AS DISPLAYED IN THE INSTRUMENT
CLUSTER

In certain Model 211 vehicles, the Flexible Service System Plus (FSS +) maintenance intervals may not display the MBUSA service criteria, when bringing up the service job menu (Figure 1), using the multifunction keys located on the steering wheel.

The specific affected vehicles are noted ("flagged") in VMI.

Please perform this Service Campaign the next time the affected vehicle is in the workshop for service. Please check VMI before performing this Service Campaign.

Please perform the "Flashing" of the instrument cluster.

INSTRUMENT CLUSTER "FLASHING" PROCEDURE

1. Prior to performing this Service Campaign, please review the entire document.

2. Connect the affected vehicle to the Star Diagnosis System (SDS).

NOTE:
The SDS must be patched for FSS+.

3. Start the diagnosis session.

4. Select Model 211, then select "Control Units".

5. Next select "Communication & Information".

6. Select "ASSYST PLUS" (also known as FSS +).

7. Select "Control Unit Adaptations".

8. Next select "Version Coding".

9. Select "Optional Equipment" make a list of the current status of all options on a piece of paper.

NOTE:
You will need the options information later to set relevant options, at the end of this "flashing" procedure.

10. Return to "Version Coding" via F1.

11. Select "Fahrzeug-Wartung fuer USA, confirm with F3

NOTE REGARDING RESULTS FOR STEP 11:

Result: "Standard" (Pruefung der aktuellen Wartungsprogramm-Variante) proceed with Step 12 below.

Result: "USA - Version" (Wartungsprogramm auf USA-Variante programmieren) proceed with Step 13 below.

12. With the "Standard" result proceed with: select "Download the USA-Version of servicing program", upon the question: "Do you nevertheless want to continue?", select "YES" and perform "download" function.

13. If the result was "USA-Version", return back to "Control Unit Adaptions" then select "Version Coding" Next select "Optional Equipment" and set all relevant options as noted on paper to present (i.e. Panorama roof, Climate Control etc.).

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Vehicles "flagged" in VMI, the result after Step 11 will be:
"Standard" (Pruefung der aktuellen Wartungsprogramm-Variante), thus the download of the USA-Version is necessary.

Step 13 MUST be performed regardless, because after the download, the ECU has lost the memory for optional equipment and must be therefore rest.

It is possible that the communication between SDS and ASSYST PLUS gets disconnected after the flash download (Step 12 above). If this is so, you would see: "not coded" while reading the status of "Optional Equipment". In this case, please restart the communication with ASSYST PLUS and perform the version coding of the optional equipment (see Step 13 above).
