Body - Water leaks Into Trunk

Leakage from Spare Wheel Well

If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of leakage from the spare wheel well possibly allowing water to enter the trunk, please perform the below procedure. The adhesive between the spare wheel well and the body may not be evenly applied and therefore may not be leak tight. An even bead of adhesive, approximately 5 mm in diameter, should be visible all around.





1. Visually inspect adhesive bead (Figure 1, A). To avoid unnecessary sealing work, always verify location of leak using compressed air or water.

2. Remove spare wheel cover from luggage compartment.

3. Remove spare wheel.

4. Remove vehicle tool kit container.

5. Loosen battery from battery hold down and move to side with cables connected. Remove Styrofoam pad from under battery.

Note:
Exercise appropriate cautions in handling battery (refer to WIS document no. AS54.10-Z-0001-01A.

6. Dry spare wheel well.

7. Raise vehicle.

8. Tie right side heat shield to the side.

9. Using a scraper, remove all protruding adhesive. Avoid damaging the paint, if damaged, ensure proper corrosion protection is applied. Use the primer touch up paint stick.

10. Clean bond area with wax and grease remover. The bonding area must be dry and clean.

11. Apply plastic primer to spare wheel well in area to be sealed.

12. Apply body sealant and smooth with a brush.

13. Following specified curing time, check for leaks using water.

14. Untie right heat shield.

15. Lower vehicle.

16. Install Styrofoam pad and battery.

17. Install vehicle tool kit container.

18. Install spare wheel.

19. Replace spare wheel cover in luggage compartment.
