Emergency call (E-CALL), general
Emergency Call (E-CALL) is an automatic emergency call system that utilizes the availability of new technologies such as vehicle location finding via satellite and mobile telecommunications for minimizing the consequences of accidents.
The emergency call, as well as an exact location description are made possible with E-Call, irrespective of human misconduct in stress situations.
Function sequence
An Emergency call can be triggered automatically or manually. The following types of triggering should be distinguished for this:
Automatic triggering process
^ by the restraint systems control module (N2/7)
^ by the tilted cone sensor integrated in the E-call control module (A35/8) B66.
Manual triggering process
^ By pressing the SOS pushbutton switch (S93/3)
Note from Japanese government:
1. Official confirmation of position specifications is determined by the police and the person involved in the accident.
2. The position detail is only additional information
If an alarm is triggered, an emergency call telegram is compiled by the E-call control module (A35/8), which contains information on the severity of the accident, identification of the vehicle, the vehicle position and on the type of alarm triggering. The emergency call telegram is transmitted via the vehicle telephone equipment.
If the CTEL antenna is faulty, a switchover is made automatically to the Emergency Call backup antennae (A2/50).
Once a conversation with those affected by the accident has been successfully set up, an emergency call (phone voice connection) is made to the responsible rescue service (police, fire department etc.).
Then a voice connection (via telephone) is completed from the vehicle to the rescue service. Then the required rescue measures are started.
When initially started the system performs an authorization. Without authorization it is not possible to make an Emergency Call. When authorization is missing, the Emergency Call system does not operate.
PDC network
The alarm call is routed over the PDC mobile network to the PESC (Public Emergency Service Center).
The PDC network in Japan is nowadays almost universally available.
The system is composed of:
^ D2B-capable vehicle equipment
^ cellular radio network (Personal Digital Cellular)
^ handset
^ alarm call HQ
^ phone antenna (PDC)
^ two emergency antennas (PDC)
The vehicle equipment is composed of the following components:
^ a localizing system (GPS receiver) integrated into the E-call control module (A35/8)
^ a tilting cone sensor integrated into the E-call control module(A35/8) (B66)
^ car phone (PDC module in control module)
^ the available vehicle sensors (crash sensor, wheel rpm sensors)
^ SOS pushbutton switch (S93/3)
