Component Identification:

TELE AID, general
TELE AID is an automatic emergency call system using the availability of new technologies such as vehicle location finding via satellite and wide distribution of mobile telephone network for reducing accident causes (rescue time reduction). Emergency calls and precise location description are automated by TELE AID and therefore do not depend on incorrect human behavior in stress situations.
TELE AID includes three services:
^ Tele Aid emergency call
^ TELE AID telediagnosis
^ MB Info

TELE AID emergency call is supplemented by TELE AID telediagnosis and the MB-Info service The TELE AID telediagnosis can be used in the event of a vehicle defect to get help fast. The prerequisites and the functional sequence for the TELE AID telediagnosis are nearly identical to the functional sequence for a TELE AID emergency call. If vehicle operational problems occur, the driver can reach the responsible Mercedes-Benz service points via MB-Info.

Function sequence for a TELE AID emergency call
A TELE AID emergency call can be actuated automatically or manually. The following actuation procedures should be distinguished:
^ Automatic procedure: by means of the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) or the external tilting cone sensor (B66).
^ Manual procedure: by operating the SOS pushbutton switch (S93/3).

Once an alarm has been triggered, the D2B telephone and TELE AID transmitter/receiver (A35/17) creates an emergency call telegram. The emergency call telegram includes the following:
^ Information on the severity of the accident
^ Vehicle identification
^ Vehicle position
^ Alarm activation type

If the telephone antenna (A2/22) is defective, the system automatically switches to the emergency call system left backup antenna (A2/54) and emergency call system right backup antenna (A2/55). The emergency call telegram is transmitted via the vehicle telephone equipment (D-net).

The number of the service provider to be dialed is stored on the SIM card installed in the D2B telephone and TELE AID transmitter/ receiver (A35/17) and is dialed automatically by the system. The numbers dialed by the system vary according to the requested service. While the Tegaron (debitel) company is responsible for the TELE AID emergency call, the MB customer assistance center (CAC) is responsible for the TELE AID telediagnosis and MB-Info. The emergency call telegram is received and decoded by the service provider. When this is done, the position data contained in the message are converted by means of a street database into location and street name and forwarded together with further information from the emergency call telegram to the rescue headquarters responsible (as a general rule the police).

The decoded emergency call telegram is transmitted to the rescue headquarters by the service provider as follows:
^ via electronic data transfer
^ via a telephone voice connection.

With a TELE AID service (emergency call, telediagnosis, MB-Info) a voice connection (via D-net) is accomplished from the vehicle to the associated service point. Then the required rescue measures are started there. When initially started the system performs an authorization. For this purpose it is necessary that a valid SIM card is installed in the D2B telephone and TELE AID transmitter/receiver (A35/17) and a service contract is made with the corresponding service provider.

A SIM card for the D1-net or the D2-net service can be installed for the TELE AID service. Without authorization it is not possible to operate a TELE AID service. When the system is not authorized or a TELE AID emergency call malfunction is present, the SOS pushbutton switch (S93/3) indicator lamp comes on and an error message appears in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1). When the system is not authorized or in case of a TELE AID telediagnosis malfunction or an MB-Info, an error message also appears in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1).
