Balance Shaft: Testing and Inspection
Inspect basic position of the balancing shaft
Remove/Install
DANGER:
- Risk of death. Death may result if vehicle slips or topples from the lifting platform.
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
1.1 Remove automatic transmission.
1.2 Remove manual transmission.
2 Dismount clutch.
3 Remove flywheel.
4 Remove cylinder head covers.
- Air cleaner mounted on vehicle air cleaner positioned at engine side.
5 Dismount combination valve (right)
- On engines fitted with air pump.
NOTE: Installation: Replace combination valve gasket.
6 Position engine to 40 degrees after ignition TDC of cylinder 1.
NOTE:
- Engine must not be cranked backwards.
- Rotate engine at crankshaft in direction of rotation until 40 degrees marking on belt pulley/ vibration damper is aligned with marking on timing case cover. Grooves (1) at the camshafts must point in direction of inner V.
7 Inspect basic position of camshafts.
NOTE: Fit locating plates (2) flush onto the right and left cylinder head and insert into the grooves (1) of the camshafts.
- If this is not possible, Set the basic position of camshafts.
8 Inspect basic position of the balancing shaft
NOTE:
- The bore (3) at the rear correctional weight (4) must correspond with the bore in the crankcase.
- Fix bore with a pin or a suitable drift (diameter 8.40, 8.55 mm).
- If the bore (3) at the correctional weight (4) at the back corresponds with the bore in the crankcase, the pin at the crankcase (A) and the notch in the front correctional weight (B) must then point towards each other.
- The pin (A) and the notch (B) are visible at a depth of approx. 22 cm from the cylinder head separating surface through the left timing case recess.
- If the markings of the front and rear balance shaft do not match, the balance shaft must be replaced, Remove balancing shaft
- Installation: When installing balancing shaft, pay attention to assignment of balancing shaft to engine.
- General information on assigning balancing shaft to engine.
9 Install in the reverse order.
