Removal and Replacement
Models 129, 170, 202, 203, 208, 210, 209.365/375, 140 (As Of 11/1/93):
Model 140 (Up To 10/31/93):
Removal
1. Remove brake discs on rear axle. [1][2]Procedures
2. Model 202, 208 or 210, remove cover sheet below the rear squab.
3. Models 129 or 140, remove heat shield from exhaust system.
4. Preload automatic slack adjuster.
- Model 140. Adjustments
- Model 202, 208 or 210. Adjustments
- Model 129 or 170, release adjustable slack adjuster. Adjustments
5. Detach return spring (111) using tool No. 116 589 01 62 00 (041). 1z
6. Detach spring (107) using tool No 112 589 09 61 00 (040).
7. Remove brake shoes (103) above the rear axle shaft flange (68).
- If brake shoes are burnt, replace brake shoes (103) and return springs (107, 111, 112).
- On vehicles with internally ventilated brake discs on the rear axle, the brake discs must also be replaced.
8. Detach return spring (112).
9. Remove expanding lock (109).
Installation
10. Install in reverse sequence, noting the following:
- Ensure correct fit of return spring (111).
- Ensure correct fit of spring (107)
- Ensure correct fit of spring (112).
The return spring (112) must be located below the bolt (b).
- Models 129, 140 as of 11/1993, 170, 202, 208 or 210, back off adjuster (105) and insert into both brake shoes so that the adjusting wheel (c) points in the direction of travel.
- Model 140 up to 10/1993, back off adjuster (105) and insert into both brake shoes so that the flat on the adjusting screw (e) points upwards. The adjusting screw (e) must point in the direction of travel on the left side and backwards on the right side.
- Models 129, 140 as of1. 11.93, 170, 202, 208 or 210, smear the thread of the thrust pad (104) and cylindrical section of the adjusting wheel (c) with MB long-life grease.
- Model 140 up to 31.10.93, smear the thread of the screw (b) and adjusting wheel (c) with MB long-life grease.
- Smear all bearing and sliding surfaces on the expanding lock (109) with MB long-life grease
11. Models 140, 202, 208 or 210, release automatic slack adjuster, refer to Unload Automatic Slack Adjuster. Adjustments
Models 129 or 170, tension adjustable slack adjuster. Adjustments
12. Adjust parking brake.
