Rear Knuckle: Service and Repair



Remove/Install Wheel Carrier
- except CODE (Z04) Light armoring
- except CODE (Z07) Top protection
- except CODE (979) Special protection version


Shown On Model 220 With Airmatic:






DANGER:
- Risk of death. Death may result if vehicle slips or topples from the lifting platform.
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.


CAUTION:
- While working on the rear axle care must be taken to ensure that the surface of all aluminum components do not get any scratches, cracks and notches. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be affected
- See notes on self-locking nuts and bolts
- Installation: The mount must be in the design reference position when tightening. Otherwise the rubber mounts are constantly under preload and are damaged as a result.


1 Remove twelve-point collared nut (12) from rear axle shaft (37)
2 Remove rear wheels
3 Remove rear axle brake caliper

NOTE: Dangle brake caliper and hook to one side.

4 Remove brake disc
5 Remove parking brake shoes
6 Remove rear brake cable pull (112a)
7 Remove (L6/3) and right (L6/4) rear axle rpm sensor
8 Check whether rear axle shaft is firmly seated in rear axle shaft flange

CAUTION: Do not damage rubber sleeves or rotor for speed sensor.

- If the rear axle shaft is difficult to remove, press rear shaft out of rear axle shaft flange.

9 Remove spring link (6) at wheel carrier (7)

CAUTION: Installation: The rear-axle shaft must be horizontal when tightening the nut

10 Remove link rod torsion bar (6k) from wheel carrier (7)
- Vehicles with code 489a (AIRMATIC)

11 Press track rod joint (4c) out of wheel carrier (7)
12 Remove thrust arm (5) from wheel carrier (7)
- Except engine 275

13 Remove tension strut (3) from wheel carrier (7)
- Except engine 275

14 Remove camber strut (2) from wheel carrier (7)
- Except engine 275

15 Remove wheel carrier (7) from rear axle shaft (37)

CAUTION: Do not damage rubber boots or rpm sensor rotor.

16 Fasten rear axle shaft (37) with wire
17 Remove rear axle shaft flange (10)

NOTE: Only if brake caliper dust shield (112c) has to be removed.

18 Install in the reverse order
19 Perform chassis alignment check

NOTE: After installation of new parts.
