Catalytic Converter: Service and Repair



Remove and installing catalytic converter or front exhaust system







1 Remove engine compartment paneling.
2 Separate plug connections (G3/5x1, G3/6x1) of sensors (downstream of TWC).

NOTE: Push the connectors out of the holders for this step.

3 Detach front exhaust system/catalytic converter at exhaust manifold.

CAUTION: Installation: Replace bolts (1). Inspect rivet nuts in exhaust manifold, replace if necessary.

4 Support exhaust system.
5 Detach bracket (2) of exhaust system at transmission.

NOTE: Slacken bolts (3) for this step.

6 Detach bracket (2) at front exhaust system/right and left catalytic converter.

CAUTION: Installation: Check tapping plates (4), replace if necessary. Replace nuts (5).

7 Push together bracket (2).
8 Separate front exhaust system/three way catalytic converter (12) from rear exhaust system.

CAUTION: Installation: Check seal ring (6) for damage, replace if necessary.

- Use emery cloth to remove combustion and corrosion residues at connection points.
- Replace bolts (7) and nuts (8).

9 Remove front exhaust system/three way catalytic converter (12).

NOTE: The right-hand catalytic converter (12a) can be removed separately from the left-hand catalytic converter.

CAUTION: Installation: Check seal ring (9) for damage, replace if necessary.

- Use emery cloth to remove combustion and corrosion residues at connection points.
- Replace bolts (10) and nuts (11).
- Install front exhaust system/catalytic converter free of stress.

10 Install in the reverse order.
