Remove/Install Rear Suspension Strut
- with CODE (487a) Active Body Control (ABC)
DANGER:
- Lethal injuries are possible if vehicle slips off of lifting platform
- Align vehicle between the columns of the hydraulic hoist and position the four support plates below the hoist support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
- Risk of injury to skin or eyes from hydraulic fluid spraying out under pressure. Risk of poisoning from swallowing hydraulic fluid.
- Depressurize the hydraulic system completely before starting any work on the system. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses.
CAUTION: Replace self-locking nuts and bolts.
NOTE:
- See notes on ABC-suspension
- The motion sensors must be calibrated using STAR DIAGNOSIS every time the suspension struts are replaced
1 Remove cover (41e) and cut open the foam insert underneath
CAUTION: Ensure that the cables for the left and right rear suspension strut motion sensors (B22/1, B22/6) are not damaged.
2 Disconnect plug connectors for left and right rear suspension strut motion sensors (B22/1, B22/6)
3 Unscrew nuts (41f, g)
4 Remove rear wheels
5 Open bleed screws (57) and depressurize suspension struts (41)
CAUTION:
- The engine must be shut off for at least 5 minutes.
- Open bleed screws carefully so that the hydraulic oil can drain out slowly to prevent the body from dropping too rapidly
6 Undo quick-release coupling (41a) on hydraulic line
NOTE: Check protective cap (41b) and replace if necessary.
CAUTION:
- Ensure that no dirt enters the open quick-release coupling.
- Installation: Ensure that the quick-release fitting is fully engaged.
7 Remove fixed caliper with brake pads on rear axle
NOTE: Leave brake hose connected.
CAUTION: Suspend the fixed caliper with a hook to relieve the strain on the brake hose.
8 Remove cover under spring link (72)
9 Undo bolted connection (41c, 41d) between suspension strut (41) and spring link (72)
10 Press spring link (72) downwards and remove suspension strut (41)
CAUTION: Do not damage the boot. Do not bend the level sensor link rod and joints!
11 Install in the reverse order
12 Fill and bleed ABC system.
