AR35.20-P-0111I Remove/Install Radius Rod at Rear Axle



Remove/Install Radius Rod







DANGER:
- Risk of death. Death may result if vehicle slips or topples from the lifting platform.
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.


CAUTION:
- While working on the rear axle care must be taken to ensure that the surface of all aluminum components do not get any scratches, cracks and notches. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be affected
- See notes on self-locking nuts and bolts.


1 Remove rear wheels
2 Remove rear axle brake caliper (111)

NOTE: Dangle rear axle brake caliper and hook to one side.

3 Remove brake disk (113)
4 Remove right muffler

CAUTION: In order to prevent damage to the brake cable bracket at the rear axle, parts of the exhaust system must be removed.

5 Detach rear rubber mount from left muffler
6 Detaching parking brake cables (112a) on automatic cable adjuster (110b)
7 Unscrew bolts for propeller shaft intermediate bearing (106a)
8 Detach rear propeller shaft assembly (106) from rear axle center assembly.

NOTE:
- Flexible disk remains on propeller shaft.
- Installation: Connect rear propeller shaft to rear axle center assembly

9 Slacken flexible coupling fitted sleeves on flange.

NOTE: Tie up propeller shaft to one side.

10 Unclip cables from right rear brake pad contact sensor connector (S10/4x1) and left (L6/3x1)/right (L6/4x1) rpm sensor connector at rear axle carrier and track rod
- If necessary, depending on cable length.

11.1 Remove level sensor control rod (120a) from torsion bar linkage rod.
- Vehicles with AIRmatic

11.2 Remove level sensor control rod (122a) from both track control arms.
- Vehicles with active body control (ABC)

12 Use assembly attachment, pit hoist or floor jack beneath rear axle center assembly to support rear axle (1).
13 Remove rear axle mounting bolts, front (1c).

CAUTION: Installation: recut thread on frame floor with tap.


14 Carefully lower rear axle (1) until torque strut bolted connection to rear axle carrier is accessible

CAUTION: Take care to avoid trapping brake cables and lines.

15 Remove torque strut (3) from wheel carrier and rear axle carrier

CAUTION: Installation: The rear axle shaft must be horizontal when tightening the nuts.

16 Install in the reverse order.
