Lamp Warning Indicator Intermittently Shows 3rd Brake Light Fault

In Model 220 vehicles produced before approximately October 2000, it is possible that the lamp warning indicator in the Instrument Cluster (A1) may erroneously indicate a fault intermittently in the Center High Mounted Stop Lamp (CHMSL), also called the 3rd Brake Light (E21).

Note:
Note that the CHMSL itself operates properly, only the fault warning is in error.





If you encounter instances of this complaint, after verifying that the CHMSL is operating normally and the wiring is properly connected, inspect and replace the CHMSL with the current version. The current and previous versions are identified by the circuit board pattern, as shown in Figure 1. Only the latest version is available from Spare Parts.
