Interior - Noises From The Instrument Panel Area

Model 220.170/174/175/176/179/183/184 Noises in the Area of the Instrument Panel

If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of the described noise conditions indicated below, perform the respective repair procedure to resolve.








A. Creaking Noise in Area of the Instrument Panel Defrost Vent Ducting, Up to VIN A398923
1. Loosen the two upper screws for instrument panel (Figure 1, 1 and 2).
2. Pull instrument panel toward driver and tighten screws.
3. Road test to determine if noise is gone. If noise is still present, proceed with steps 4 through 7.
4. Remove instrument panel. Refer to WIS document AR68.10-P-1000M.
5. Cut four 10mm X 25 mm pieces from felt strip (A001 983 23 10).
6. Install the two strips in the corners of the both ducts as shown by the arrows in Figure 2.
7. Install instrument panel.





B. Vibration Noise from the Instrument Panel, Up to VIN A404697
This may be caused by the front passenger airbag cable tie contacting the air duct.
1. Remove right side air outlet. Refer to WIS document AR68.10-P-1100M.
2. Insert felt between the cable tie and the instrument panel air duct (Figure 3).
3. Install right side outlet.

Vehicle chassis noise(s), locate (94-1017) Instrument panel - complete, R&R (68-4605)
Cracking noise in the area of the defroster vent air ducting, rectify (02-4729)
Vibration noises in upper area of instrument panel, rectify (02-4734)
