Remove/Install Propeller Shaft

Illustration Shows Propeller Shaft With Three-arm Flange:

Remove/install

CAUTION: See notes on self-locking nuts and bolts

DANGER:
- Risk of death. Death may result if vehicle slips or topples from the lifting platform.
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

1 Raise vehicle.
2 Remove exhaust system as of flange connection
3 Detach reinforcement brace (35)

NOTE: With model 220.074/174 spacers are below the reinforcement brace.

4 Detach front exhaust shielding plate (105k) from exhaust shielding plate above center muffler (105e)

NOTE: Installation: Install new sheet metal screws and sheet metal nuts.

5 Remove exhaust shielding plate above center muffler (105e) in area close to tunnel

NOTE: Installation: Install new sheet metal nuts

6 Detach front reinforcement brace (34)
7 Only slacken bolts of propeller shaft intermediate bearing (7)
8 Disconnect front propeller shaft (1) at transmission

NOTE:
- Flexible coupling remains on propeller shaft.
- Installation: Mount the front propeller shaft on the transmission.

9 Detach rear propeller shaft (2) from rear axle center assembly

NOTE:
- Flexible coupling remains on propeller shaft.
- Installation: Connect rear propeller shaft to rear axle center assembly

10 Loosen fitted sleeves of flexible couplings.
11 Unscrew bolts of propeller shaft intermediate bearing (7)
12 Pull propeller shaft off centering pins on transmission and rear axle, then extract to the rear

NOTE: Installation: Fill cavities of both centering sleeves with rubber or multi-layer bearing bushes with multi-purpose grease.

13 Detach front propeller shaft from rear section at the slide connection

NOTE:
- Only if necessary.
- Installation: Assemble propeller shaft Coat splined profile with Molykote grease.

Inspect
14 Check propeller shaft intermediate bearing (7) for wear.
- Replace if necessary.

15 Check centering sleeves for wear
- Replace if necessary.

16 Check flexible coupling of front propeller shaft for wear
- Replace if necessary.

17 Check vibration damper (model 220.028/128) (20) of rear propeller shaft for wear

NOTE: Label vibration damper in relation to three or four-arm flange before removal.

- Install new flexible coupling or vibration damper if necessary.

18 Install in the reverse order.
