Replace Radial Seal Ring On Drive Pinion (Rear Final-drive Unit Installed)
Shown On Rear Final-drive Unit Dia. 198 Mm:
Remove/Install
DANGER:
- Risk of fatal accident from vehicle slipping or toppling off the lift platform
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
1 Jack up vehicle
2 Draining rear axle oil
3 Remove exhaust system as of flange connection
4 Detach rear axle shafts (37) from connecting flange
NOTE:
- Move rear axle shaft so that is roughly horizontal and then push together.
- Remove rear axle shaft from connecting flange at a downward angle and tie up rear axle carrier
CAUTION:
- Installation: Replace self-locking bolts and washers.
- Lightly oil bolts at thread and bolt head contact surface.
5 Unscrew bolts from center driveshaft bearing support (106a)
6 Detach rear section of driveshaft (106) from rear final-drive unit (50).
NOTE:
- Flexible coupling remains on driveshaft
- Installation: Connect rear section of driveshaft to rear final-drive unit
7 Loosen fitted sleeves on flexible couplings
NOTE: Tie up driveshaft to one side
Measuring
8 Measure and note overall moment of friction on drive pinion
9 Slacken and unscrew hexagon collared nut (40)
NOTE:
- Do not remove the collar protection when slackening hexagon collared nut
- To improve control when slackening the hexagon collared nut, press the shop-made bush into the commercially available socket wrench bit
CAUTION:
- Installation: Replace hexagon collared nut and tighten in stages until the previously measured friction torque is obtained.
- Installation: Secure twelve-point or hexagon collared nut on drive pinion joint flange.
10 Pull off joint flange (41)
11 Press out radial seal (42) using a suitable tool
CAUTION: Installation: Replace radial sealing ring and coat sealing lip with universal hypoid gear oil
12 Replace final-drive unit (55) vent
13 Install in the reverse order
14 Check rear final-drive unit oil level and correct if necessary.
