Corrosion / Paint Damage on Tailgate
If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of corrosion or paint damage on the tailgate, refer to the below for repair information.
A. Corrosion in Area of Outside Door Handle Opening (Figure 1) - If the corrosion noted near the outside door handle on the rear tailgate (Figure 2) is more than 1.5 mm of sheet metal loss or rust-through damage over a length of 3 cm in the area of the handle opening, replacement of the tailgate is permissible.
B. Corrosion or Paint Damage In Area of Door Handle Strip (Figure 1)
1. Remove license plate from the tailgate
2. Remove the handle strip from the tailgate. Refer to WIS document AR72.20-P-3650A.
3. Remove corrosion on the inside and outside around A as shown in Figure 3.
4. Paint tailgate (observe work instructions from paint supplier).
5. Before installing handle strip on tailgate, wax the surrounding area with MB cavity preservation wax. Brush the wax in the area of the handle strip only.
6. Install chafe protection tape A171 628 00 97 (Figure 4).
7. Reassemble in reverse order.
Note:
Do not use alcohol to clean the brushes, as this will cause the wax to remain sticky.
C. Corrosion Near the Rear Window
1. Replacement of the tailgate (door) is permissible when it is necessary to remove the rear window in order to remove rust from the rear window frame.
2. Paint tailgate.
