Design of the 2-stage driver airbag
- The airbag unit housing is crewed into the center of the steering wheel and is padded on the driver side. The padding, inscribed with the Mercedes-Benz logo and "SRS" AIRBAG", is fitted with a pre-determined breakthrough for the escaping airbag.

- In the housing is the gas generator together with two acid-free solid fuel units. The gas generator is connected to the folded airbag via a filter. The airbag itself is made from high quality, tear-resistant nylon fabric.
To ignite the two solid fuel units, they are fitted with an ignition squib.

- The electrical connection of the ignition squibs from the revolving steering wheel to the restraint systems control module (N2/7) is via the fanfare and airbag contact spiral (A45) and the driver wiring harness.

- So as to avoid unwanted release, the ignition squibs are fitted with short-circuit links which, when disconnected, independently short-circuit the connections of the ignition squibs.
