Multifunction display (A1p13)
Various driver information is shown in the multifunction display (A1p13).
In addition to displaying the total and trip distance (main screen), information for the following systems can also be selected and displayed on the multifunction display (A1p13):
- Audio
- Telephone
- Navigation Distronic (DTR)
- Trip computer
As of 1.6.01 in addition the digital speed display is faded in upon request.
As of 1.7.02 in addition the following systems are displayed:
- TELE-AID
- Voice control
- Fault memory
- Configuration
As of 1.6.03 in addition the tire pressure loss warning (RDW) is displayed.
Change as of 1.6.01
On vehicles with taxi version (with code (450)) for circuit 30 the warning messages are displayed for t = 2 minutes once per driving cycle and can be acknowledged.
In addition, various fault messages and warnings can be displayed on the multifunction display (A1p13) if the driver so wishes.
If there is a fault message or warning message which is not actually displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13), this is displayed by the appearance of the information symbol for faults (h).
Dividing error messages and warnings into categories
The messages are assigned the following 3 categories corresponding to their priority:
- Messages of the highest priority belong to category 1. These messages cannot be acknowledged. A short warning tone also sounds when these messages are displayed. Any errors in categories 2 and 3 are hidden.
- Messages of medium priority belong to category 2. These messages can be acknowledged by pressing the trip distance reset button (A1s3). A short warning tone also sounds when these messages are displayed. Any errors in category 3 are hidden.
- Messages of the lowest priority belong to category 3. These messages can be acknowledged by pressing the trip distance reset button (A1s3). There is no warning tone.
If there are no other faults, the display changes to the previous display screen after acknowledging a fault message.
Many messages are accompanied by a supplementary warning or indicator lamp which lights up in response to a signal from the system. These lamps are actuated for as long as the fault exists. This also applies if the associated message has been acknowledged.
Storing messages
Messages in category 1 are not stored.
After acknowledgment most fault messages in categories 2 and 3 are however stored in the instrument cluster memories (A1).
Fault messages in categories 2 and 3 which have not been acknowledged are automatically stored in the fault memory after "circuit 15R OFF".
Displaying warning and fault messages
Apart from for a few exceptions fault messages are first displayed when the engine is running. Current fault messages are faded in immediately.
If the fault is only present briefly, messages in categories 2 and 3 are faded in for at least t = 2 seconds. Messages in category 1 are displayed for as long as the fault remains.
Several current messages:
- If there are several faults in different categories, the message in the category classified as more important is displayed. New messages in the same or higher classified category hide the message displayed previously.
- If there are several faults of the same category, the messages are always displayed alternately every 5 seconds.
If all the messages were acknowledged while driving, these are displayed once again with "circuit 15R OFF" as a reminder. In this case, current messages, e.g. lights warning, hide this reminder function. If there were no messages present, the basic display appears after "circuit 15R OFF".
Displaying stored fault messages
When the instrument cluster (A1) is active, you can scroll though the saved messages:
- Press the system selection button (S110s3) until the "FAULTS" display appears in the multifunction display (A1p13).
- Scroll through the fault messages using the scroll forward/back button (S110s1). The messages are displayed in the order in which they were acknowledged.
Example: Priority of message display
4 of the numerous possible messages together with a brief description are presented in the following.
The order in which the messages are displayed if several errors occur at the same time can be explained using an example:
- If the washer fluid level is too low, the message in category 3 "CHECK WASHER FLUID LEVEL" is shown in the multifunction display (A1p13). The information comes from the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module via the Controller Area Network bus class B (interior) (CAN-B)(N10/1).
- If in addition a fault now occurs with the alternator (G2), the following message in category 2 is displayed "BATTERY/ ALTERNATOR CHECK - LOCATE A WORKSHOP This message hides the 1st message due to its higher priority.
- If the coolant level is too low, the message in category 2 "CHECK COOLANT LEVEL" is displayed. The display now changes every 5 seconds between this message and the message "BATTERY/ALTERNATOR CHECK - LOCATE A WORKSHOP" as there are two messages with the same priority. The signal comes from the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) via the CAN-B.
- A message in category 2 is displayed when there is a fault in CAN-B and/or the Controller Area Network bus class C (engine compartment) (CAN-C) and as a result the connection to several control units is faulty. If the connection to only one control unit is faulty, the symbol of the system in question is faded in.
The example is based on the assumption that none of the messages is acknowledged and canceled.
Warning messages in the multifunction display (A1p13) as of 1.6.03
Distronic system (DTR)
The warning message "DISTRONIC - LOCATE A WORKSHOP" is first displayed from when the engine is running.
The warning message "CLEAN SENSOR -SEE OPERATOR'S MANUAL" is erased when the vehicle is started again. If the fault eliminates itself (e.g. due to slush), this is detected by the system and it is not necessary for the vehicle to be started again to erase.
The warning message goes out in the multifunction display (A1p13) and the warning message "DISTRONIC AVAILABLE AGAIN - RE- ACTIVATE" for t = 5 seconds. The system is ready for operation again.
Diesel exhaust emission filter system (engines 611, 612)
As of 1.6.03 the following 2 warning messages are shown in the multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1):
- The 1st warning message indicates a dirty filter, the warning message "REGENERATE EXHAUST EMISSION FILTER URGENTLY. SEE OPERATOR'S MANUAL" is displayed
- The 2nd warning message ensues if there is a self-cleaning system defect, the warning message "CARRY OUT EXHAUST EMISSION FILTER MAINTENANCE".
Sliding roof system (with code (414a) glass electrical tilting/ sliding roof or with code (413) panoramic sliding roof)
As of 1.6.03 with "circuit 15C OFF" (transmitter key (A8/1) removed) and when opening the driver door of the vehicle with the sliding roof open, the warning message "OPEN SLIDING ROOF" is displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13).
Telephone system
Telephone system As of 1.6.03 the warning message "ENTER TELEPHONE PIN" appears in the display t = 60 seconds after the engine is started and is erased automatically after t = 5 seconds. It should be pointed out to the driver that his telephone (depending on the special equipment) is not yet active.
