Removal and Replacement

Remove/Install Camshafts

1 Remove front cover on cylinder head
2 Position piston of cylinder 1 to 30 degrees after TDC
- rotate engine at crankshaft.

NOTE: At 30 degrees after TDC of the 1st cylinder the cams (77) and (78) can be turned without the valves touching the piston crown.

3 Use a colored marking to mark camshaft sprockets (75) and (76) and timing chain (73) relative to each other (arrows)

NOTE: Installation: Ensure that the scribe marks on the timing chain align with the scribe marks on the camshaft sprockets, Inspect basic position of camshafts If necessary, after inspecting, Set the basic position of camshafts.

4 Remove chain tensioner (14)

CAUTION: If the complete chain tensioner is slackened, it must be removed, disassembled and re-assembled as described.

5 Remove exhaust camshaft sprocket (76)

NOTE: Installation: Install exhaust camshaft gear (76) with timing chain (73) fitted on Replace bolts of camshaft sprocket use only once

6 Lift timing chain (73) off inlet camshaft sprocket (75)
7 Use wrench (1) to rotate camshafts (77) and (78) free of tension

CAUTION: The camshafts are sensitive to breakage. Therefore turn the camshafts so that as far as possible the base circles of the cams contact the compensation elements (camshafts in camshaft bearings free from tension).

8 Unbolting camshaft bearing caps

CAUTION:
- Installation: install camshaft bearing caps at the same point.
- See marking of camshaft bearing caps.

9 Take out camshafts (77) and (78)

NOTE:
- Installation:
Oil compensation elements and camshaft bearing points.
- Place the cams (77) and (78) in the bearing points so that as far as possible the base circles contact the cup tappets.
- Pay attention to assignment of camshafts.
- Inspect camshaft code numbers.
- if necessary, check the timing.
- See Identification of camshaft code number.

10 Install in the reverse order.
