AR41.10-P-0050EA Remove/Install Propeller Shaft
Removing And Installing Propeller Shaft
1 Remove lower part of engine encapsulation
- Model 202.1
2 Remove rear left frame cross brace
- Model 170, 208.4
3 Remove exhaust system downstream of connector
- Model 202.0
4 Unhook suspension rubbers of exhaust system
- Models 170, 202.1,208
NOTE: Support exhaust system at rear muffler
5 Detach exhaust shield (105c) from tunnel
6 Detach rear transverse bridge (21)
7 Detach reinforcement brace (27)
8 Loosen clamping nut of propeller shaft (3)
NOTE:
- Loosen clamping nut approx. one turn, do not slide back rubber boot (the rubber boot slides with it)
- Installation: Tighten clamping nut of propeller shaft, ensure correct fit of rubber boot.
9 Loosen bolts (7a) of propeller shaft intermediate bearing
NOTE: Installation: Only tighten bolts (7a) after fixing the flexible disks on the transmission and rear axle.
10 Remove rear engine mount
- Model 170, 208 with automatic transmission
11 Detach front propeller shaft from transmission
NOTE: The flexible disk remains on the propeller shaft
12 Detach rear propeller shaft from rear axle center assembly
NOTE: The flexible disk remains on the propeller shaft
13 Loosen fitted sleeves of flexible disks
14 Unscrew bolts (7a) of propeller shaft intermediate bearing
NOTE: Support propeller shaft
15 Pull propeller shaft off centering spigot on transmission and rear axle and remove to the rear
NOTE: Installation: With plastic or multi-alloy bearing bushes, pack cavities of both centering sleeves with multi-purpose grease.
16 Separate front and rear propeller shaft, if necessary
NOTE:
- Installation: Coat splined shaft profile with MB long-term grease
- Installation: On model 202.121 with 4-speed automatic transmission 722.4 except with code 450 taxi version (up to 31.7.96), for logistical reasons a front propeller shaft with a 90 mm dia hole circle (80 mm previously) only is available for the spare parts requirement. The three-arm flange on the transmission is therefore to be replaced at the same time.
17 Check flexible disks, centering sleeves and propeller shaft intermediate bearing for wear
- Replace, if necessary
- Remove and install propeller shaft intermediate bearing and replace deep-groove ball bearing
- Replace centering sleeve
18 Install in reverse order
CAUTION: Installation Replace self-locking bolts and nuts
