Rear Engine Plate: Service and Repair



Remove/Install End Cover







NOTE: In production engines the radial sealing ring is vulcanized at the end cover. This end cover is not supplied as a spare part. In case of repair, install end cover with pressed in radial sealing ring.

1.1 Remove manual transmission
1.2 Remove automatic transmission
2 Remove clutch
3 Remove flywheel, two-mass flywheel or driven plate
4 Check for oil leaks
- If the radial sealing ring is found to be leaking, Replace rear crankshaft radial sealing ring
- If the cause of the oil leak cannot be clearly determined, Check rear of engine for external oil leak, determine

5 Remove bolts (4, 5)

NOTE: Installation: First of all screw on bolts (4) at end cover.

6 Press off end cover (1)
- Press end cover with vulcanized radial sealing ring off crankcase at the tabs (arrows).
- Do not damage oil pan gasket when pressing off!

CAUTION: Installation: In case of repair on vulcanized radial sealing ring, Press new radial sealing ring (21) into new rear cover, install.


NOTE:
- Installation: Screw insertion tool internal component (2) onto crankshaft.
- Clean end cover (1) separating surfaces, cover with sealing compound.
- Sealing compound alternatively
- Lubricate the radial sealing ring's (21) sealing lip and the offset surface.

CAUTION:
- Do not use grease!
- Grease prevents the radial sealing ring's sealing lip from transporting the engine oil back.
- When pressing on the end cover take care with the oil-pan gasket!
- Pay attention to dowel pins (3)


7 Check crankshaft radial sealing ring (21)
- If necessary, after inspecting, Replace rear crankshaft radial sealing ring

NOTE: If necessary install the radial sealing ring after fitting the end cover.

8 Install in the reverse order

CAUTION:
- Before installing transmission, inspect for oil leaks.
- Check rear of engine for external oil leak and determine cause.
