Upper

NOTE: Numbers in parentheses ( ) indicate a component or tool in the associated illustration.

DISASSEMBLY





1. Remove locking ring (80g), lock nut (92d) with ring nut and lock plate (92e) of upper steering shaft (70g).





2. Detach retaining ring (70f) using suitable pliers.
3. Remove disk spring (70e) and thrust ring (70d).





4. Push out steering shaft (70g) slightly, detach thrust ring (70b) and locking rings (70c).
5. Press bail bearing (70a) out of jacket tube (81b) using steering shaft (709).
6. Replace bearing ball (70a)


ASSEMBLY





1. Press a ball bearing (70a) up to the stop in the inner jacket tube (81 b) using a suitable tube.
2. Insert steering shaft (70g).
3. Press in second ball bearing (70g).





4. Slide thrust ring (70b)and locking ring (70c) together onto the steering shaft (70g). Ensure that the locking ring (70e) engages correctly in the groove of the steering shaft.
- Two locking rings are fitted on vehicles with contact spirals.





5. Push on thrust ring (70d) and disk spring (70e).
6. Mount retaining ring (70f) with the chamfer towards the disk spring on the steering shaft and press on using a suitable tube (072) until the disk spring (70e) is fully preloaded.

NOTE:
^ Check shaft for ease of movement.
^ The steering shaft must not have any play in the inner jacket tube and must be able to turn without jamming.





7. Insert new lock plate (92e) so that the retaining lugs point towards the lock nut.
8. Tighten lock nut (92d) slightly by hand.
9. Assemble locking ring (80g) on upper steering shaft (70g).
