Removing and Installing Transmission With Torque Converter
Remove/install
1 Disconnect ground cable at battery
NOTE: Installation: Code radio, set clock, calibrate power windows and set timer in vehicles with stationary heater.
2.1 Unbolt oil filler pipe (61) only from engine
2.2 Remove oil filler pipe (61) only from engine
3 Unscrew oil drain plug (4) at oil pan, drain transmission oil
NOTE: If transmission oil is scorched or contains abrasion, it is then necessary to flush oil cooler lines and oil cooler
4 Unscrew oil drain plug (9) at torque converter, drain transmission oil
CAUTION:
- If metal shavings are present in the transmission oil pan, allow the transmission oil to flow out of the torque converter through the drain opening using a clean cloth as a filter.
- If metal shavings are present in the cloth after draining the transmission oil, it is then necessary to install a new torque converter
- In case of doubt, flush the torque converter with ATF only
- Metal shavings may cause transmission damage later
5 Remove shield (62) and separate 13-pin connector (26)
6 Detach transmission cable for park shift lock (80) at transmission
NOTE:
- For installing and removing, move selector lever or range selector lever into position "P" and leave in position "P" when transmission cable removed
- Installation: Check operation of park shift lock
7 Unbolt retaining plate for rack-and-pinion steering
8 Unscrew hexagon bolts (95) of torque converter at driven plate, remove cover (81) for this step
9 Unbolt left and right oil lines (49) to oil cooler
10 Remove shift rod (63), take off clip lock for this purpose
NOTE: Installation: Set shift rod
11 Remove exhaust bracket (64)
12.1 Detach exhaust system (94) at rear together with a V-belt
12.2 Remove exhaust system (94) from plug connection
13 Remove fan shroud
14 Remove engine support with rear engine mount (65)
15 Unbolt front propeller shaft (66)
16 Unbolt propeller shaft at transfer case
17 Unbolt ground strap (46) at transmission
18 Unbolt transmission at crankcase and take down and out at an angle
CAUTION: Secure torque converter to prevent it dropping out
19 Remove torque converter
NOTE: Installation: Apply a thin film of grease to drive flange of torque converter
20 Install in the reverse order
21 Check oil level in automatic transmission and top up oil if necessary
