Function of Power Transmission

FUNCTION
- The term power flow refers to the transmission paths of drive forces and engine torques. The engine torques are transmitted to the driving wheels via the mechanical/hydraulic connection of the engine, torque converter and downstream automatic transmission and converted in the transmission via several planetary gear sets.

- Power is transmitted in the torque converter via the driven input rotor by deflecting hydraulic fluid to the output rotor connected to the transmission input shaft.

- If the converter lock-up clutch is engaged, the power flows via this mechanical connection. Depending on the ratio and actuators operated, the torque from the converter is transmitted to the output shaft via the gears of the individual planetary gear sets, using freewheels, multiple disc clutches and brakes.

- A reduction in output speed in low gears results in lower vehicle speeds with a simultaneous increase in traction forces and drive torques at the drive wheels
