After an EMERGENCY CALL is triggered (automatically or manually) the E-CALL control module (A35/8) generates an emergency call telegram and transmits it to the E-CALL center via mobile telephone.

In the case of an emergency call, the E-CALL control module (A35/8) has the sole control of the telephone system to ensure the following:
- If the telephone system is switched off before an emergency alarm is triggered, it is activated
- any present telephone connection is interrupted (ITGS also),
- it is no longer possible to operate the telephone system.

On vehicles with code 348a:
- radio connection is completed with the aid of the standard telephone antenna via the CTEL transmitter/receiver (A35) and the E-CALL control module (A35/8).

On vehicles with code 349:
- radio connection is completed with the aid of the standard telephone antenna via the E-CALL control module (A35/8).

With code 349 the CTEL transmitter/receiver is integrated into the E-CALL control module (A35/8) .

The telephone antenna depends on the model:
Model 129: Rod antenna (A28)
Models 202, 208.3, 210, 220: Telephone antenna (A2/49a1)
Models 203, 215: Telephone antenna (A2/22)

If the telephone antenna no longer operates as a result of an accident, the E-CALL control module (A35/8) switches automatically over to the EMERGENCY CALL substitute antenna (A2/50).
The E-CALL center receives the emergency call.For this purpose it is equipped with a graphic-capable workstation with road data base.There, among others, the location of the vehicle is determined from the information of the emergency call telegram. The E-CALL center relays the decoded emergency call telegram to the responsible rescue center (police, fire department, etc.).

The emergency call system must be authorized to transmit an emergency call telegram.
