Removing and installing transmission with torque converter

TRANSMISSION 722.6 in Model 129, 140, 170, 202, 208, 210









Removing, installing

1 Disconnect ground cable on battery.
Installation: Code radio, adjust clock, adjust window lifts and, with stationary heater, adjust clock.

2.1 Only unscrew oil filler pipe (61) from engine
Models 129, 140 with M119
Models 202, 210 with M111, 604, 605, 606
2.2 Remove oil filler pipe (61)
Models 129, 140 with M120
Model 210 with M119
Refer to Related Procedures, Dip Stick Tube, A/T [1][2]Procedures

3 Unscrew oil drain screw (4) from oil pan and drain transmission fluid
Torque, Oil drain plug to oil pan 20 Nm

Note: If transmission fluid is burnt or interspersed with abrasion, the oil cooler lines and oil cooler must be flushed out:

4 Unscrew oil drain screw (9) from torque converter and drain transmission fluid
Torque: Oil drain plug to torque converter Nm 16

Note: If there are metal shavings in the transmission fluid, replace torque converter
Metal shavings are not removed completely by flushing and can lead to subsequent transmission damage.

5 Remove heat shield (62) and disconnect 13-pin plug connector (26)
Note: Heat shield (62) no longer used on model 129 with M119 and M120 as of 03.96

6 Unhook wire cable/transmission for parking lock inter-lock (80) from transmission
Note: To install and remove, place selector lever or range selector or range selector lever in position < P > and leave in position < P > when wire cable/transmission is removed.

722.621 as of end no. 1977
722.622 as of end no. 16287

7 Remove cover (81) to unscrew the hexagon bolts (95) of the torque converter from the driver plate
Torque: Bolt, torque converter to driver plate M8 Nm 42

Note: Model 210 4MATIC. Unscrew retaining plate for rack-and-pinion steering beforehand

8 Unscrew left and right oil lines (49) to the oil cooler

9 Take off clip locking devices to remove shift rod (63)
Note: Follow up work: Adjust shift rod

10 Remove exhaust mount (64)

11.1 Hang up exhaust system (94) at rear with a V-belt
Models 129, 140, 210 with M119

11.2 Remove exhaust system (94) starting from connector
Models 129, 140, with M120

12 Remove fan shroud from radiator
Model 120 with M119
Model 140 with OM606

13 Remove engine support with engine mount at rear (65)

14 Unscrew front propeller shaft (66)

15 Unscrew ground strap (46) from transmission

16 Unscrew transmission from crankcase and take out downwards at an angle
Note: Secure torque converter to prevent it from falling out

17 Take out torque converter
Installation: Lubricate torque converter lightly at drive flange

18 Install in reverse order

19 Check oil level or pour oil into automatic transmission
