Replace Rear Axle Spring Strut






REMOVAL

NOTE: The vehicle must be on its wheels for removing the upper spring strut fasteners

1. Remove trunk area trim
2. Remove upper spring stay nut (5a)
- Counterhold piston rod with suitable Allen wrench (WAF5)
3. Lift vehicle

WARNING:
^ Risk of injury to the eyes and other parts of the body due to hydraulic oil spraying out under high pressure
^ Wear protective clothing and safety glasses
^ Before starting work on the hydraulic system, depressurize the system.
^ Seal open lines with blind plugs


NOTE: Refer to general notes for working on vehicles with level control/ADS. Technician Safety Information

4. Empty pressure oil system. Emptying And Filling Pressure Oil System
5. Disconnect pressure line (P4) at the connection between the steel line and pressure hose
- Pay attention to correct routing
- Discard copper sealing rings on banjo bolt (5v)
- Check and record position and distance between spring strut and wheel house for later assembly
6. Dismantle cover of spring link (72c)
7. Dismantle, remove spring strut (5) at spring link (72)
8. Check rubber mounts (5c, 5d), plate (5e), spring strut mount and rubber boot for damage and cracks
9. Check ball joint for wear
10. Check spring strut for leaks
- Slight oil mist is permissible
- If the the joint eye is moistened by oil, replace spring strut

INSTALLATION
- Install in reverse order noting the following:
- Extend spring strut so that spring strut mount contacts dome
- The plate on the Spring strut mount must point in the direction of travel.
- Replace self-locking nut (5n)
- Replace self-locking nut (5a) on model 140
- Replace copper sealing rings on banjo bolt (5v
- Fill pressure oil system
- Tighten the following components as follows:
- Self-locking nut of spring strut, level control/ADS to frame floor: 40 Nm
- Self-locking nut of spring strut, level control/ADS to spring link: 100 Nm
- Pressure line of level control to steel line: 30 Nm
- Pressure line of level control to spring strut: 30 Nm
- Pressure line of level control to pressure hose: 30 Nm
