Removing And Installing Camshaft Adjuster

Removing
1 Remove cylinder head cover (18)
2 Remove front cover (23) at cylinder head
3 Position piston of cylinder 1 to 20 degrees after ignition TDC
NOTE: Rotate engine at crankshaft in direction of rotation.
4 Lock camshafts (75 and 78)
NOTE: Insert locating pins (01) from the rear through the camshaft bearing caps into the camshaft flanges (arrows).
5 Mark timing chain (73) and camshaft gears (76 and 13) with a colored marking (arrows)
NOTE: Assembly aid.
6 Remove chain tensioner (58)
7 Remove exhaust camshaft gear (76)
8 Take camshaft adjuster off the inlet camshaft.
Installing
9 Fit camshaft adjuster onto inlet camshaft
10 Install exhaust camshaft gear (76) with timing chain (73) fitted on
NOTE:
- Replace collar bolts (15), use only once.
- Fit on timing chain so that the colored markings (arrows) on the timing chain and on the camshaft gears (13 and 76) are positioned one above the other.
11 Install chain tensioner (58)
CAUTION: If the complete chain tensioner is slackened, it has to be removed, disassembled and re-assembled as described.
12 Remove locating pins (01)
13 Rotate engine twice at crankshaft in direction of rotation
14 Check basic position of camshafts
15 Install front cover (23) at cylinder head
16 Install cylinder head cover (18)
NOTE:
- Run engine and inspect for leaks
- Inspect gasket of cylinder head cover to ensure correctly installed.
